Generating Large Labeled Data Sets for Laparoscopic Image Processing Tasks Using Unpaired Image-to-Image Translation
Micha Pfeiffer,Isabel Funke,Maria Robu,Sebastian Bodenstedt,Leon Strenger,Sandy Engelhardt,Tobias Roß,Matthew J. Clarkson,Kurinchi Selvan Gurusamy,Brian R Davidson,Lena Maier-Hein,Carina Riediger,Thilo Welsch,Jürgen Weitz,Stefanie Speidel +14 more
TL;DR: This work extent an image-to-image translation method to generate a diverse multitude of realistically looking synthetic images based on images from a simple laparoscopy simulation, and shows that this data set can be used to train models for the task of liver segmentation of laparoscopic images.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: Surgical Data Science (SDS) is a new research field that aims to improve the quality of interventional healthcare through the capture, organization, analysis and modeling of data as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparative validation of multi-instance instrument segmentation in endoscopy: Results of the ROBUST-MIS 2019 challenge
Tobias Roß,Annika Reinke,Peter M. Full,Martin Wagner,Hannes Kenngott,Martin Apitz,Hellena Hempe,Diana Mindroc-Filimon,Patrick Scholz,Thuy Nuong Tran,Pierangela Bruno,Pablo Arbeláez,Gui-Bin Bian,Sebastian Bodenstedt,Jon Lindström Bolmgren,Laura Bravo-Sánchez,Hua-Bin Chen,Cristina González,Dong Guo,Pål Halvorsen,Pheng-Ann Heng,Enes Hosgor,Zeng-Guang Hou,Fabian Isensee,Debesh Jha,Tingting Jiang,Yueming Jin,Kadir Kirtac,Sabrina Kletz,Stefan Leger,Zhixuan Li,Klaus H. Müller-Stich,Lena Maier-Hein +49 more
TL;DR: The results confirm the initial hypothesis, namely that algorithm performance degrades with an increasing domain gap, and suggest that future research should concentrate on detection and segmentation of small, crossing, moving and transparent instrument(s) (parts).
batchgenerators - a python framework for data augmentation
Fabian Isensee,Paul F. Jäger,Jakob Wasserthal,David Zimmerer,Jens Petersen,Simon A. A. Kohl,Justus Schock,André Klein,Tobias Roß,Sebastian J. Wirkert,Peter Neher,Stefan Dinkelacker,Gregor Köhler,Klaus H. Maier-Hein +13 more
Journal ArticleDOI
Large-scale medical image annotation with crowd-powered algorithms
Eric Heim,Tobias Roß,Alexander Seitel,Keno März,Bram Stieltjes,Matthias Eisenmann,Johannes Lebert,Jasmin Metzger,Gregor Sommer,Alexander W. Sauter,Fides Regina Schwartz,Andreas Termer,Felix Wagner,Hannes Kenngott,Lena Maier-Hein +14 more
TL;DR: A multistage segmentation pipeline incorporating a hybrid crowd-algorithm 3-D segmentation algorithm integrated into a medical imaging platform is developed and it is shown that the crowd is able to detect and refine inaccurate organ contours with a quality similar to that of experts.
