Journal ArticleDOI
Differences in dengue severity in infants, children, and adults in a 3-year hospital-based study in Nicaragua.
Samantha N. Hammond,Angel Balmaseda,Leonel Pérez,Yolanda Tellez,Saira Saborio,Juan Carlos Mercado,Elsa Videa,Yoryelin Rodriguez,Maria Angeles Pérez,Ricardo Cuadra,Soraya Solano,Julio Rocha,Wendy Idiaquez,Alcides Gonzalez,Eva Harris +14 more
TL;DR: Age-related differences were identified in the prevalence of specific clinical manifestations as well as in their association with a confirmed DEN diagnosis of dengue virus infections in Nicaragua.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical, epidemiologic, and virologic features of dengue in the 1998 epidemic in Nicaragua.
Eva Harris,Elsa Videa,Leonel Pérez,Erick Sandoval,Yolanda Tellez,Maria Angeles Pérez,Ricardo Cuadra,Julio Rocha,Wendy Idiaquez,Rosa Emelina Alonso,Maria A. Delgado,Luisa Amanda Campo,Francisco Acevedo,Alcides Gonzalez,Juan José Amador,Angel Balmaseda +15 more
TL;DR: Interestingly, secondary infection was not significantly correlated with DHF/DSS, in contrast to previous studies in Southeast Asia, as evidenced by the analysis of this epidemic.
Journal ArticleDOI
Serotype-specific differences in clinical manifestations of dengue.
Angel Balmaseda,Samantha N. Hammond,Leonel Pérez,Yolanda Tellez,Saira Saborio,Juan Carlos Mercado,Ricardo Cuadra,Julio Rocha,Maria Angeles Pérez,Sheyla Silva,Crisanta Rocha,Eva Harris +11 more
TL;DR: A cross-sectional study conducted on 984 and 313 hospitalized children with confirmed DENV infections during two time periods, respectively, in the same hospitals in Nicaragua provides new data to characterize the pathogenic potential of distinct DENV serotypes in human populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
High seroprevalence of antibodies against dengue virus in a prospective study of schoolchildren in Managua, Nicaragua.
Angel Balmaseda,Samantha N. Hammond,Yolanda Tellez,Laurel Imhoff,Yoryelin Rodriguez,Saira Saborio,Juan Carlos Mercado,Leonel Pérez,Elsa Videa,Elvis Almanza,Guillermina Kuan,Miguel Reyes,Leyla Saenz,Juan José Amador,Eva Harris +14 more
TL;DR: A 2‐year prospective study in schoolchildren 4–16 years old in the capital city of Managua demonstrates surprisingly high transmission of DENV in urban Nicaragua.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diagnosis of dengue virus infection by detection of specific immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgA antibodies in serum and saliva.
Angel Balmaseda,María G. Guzmán,Samantha N. Hammond,Guillermo Robleto,Carolina Flores,Yolanda Tellez,Elsa Videa,Saira Saborio,Leonel Pérez,Erick Sandoval,Yoryelin Rodriguez,Eva Harris +11 more
TL;DR: Given that saliva is a readily obtainable, noninvasive specimen, detection of DEN-specific salivary IgM should be considered a useful, cheaper diagnostic modality with similar sensitivity and specificity to IgM detection in serum.
