Given recent attention to emotion regulation as a potentially unifying function of diverse symptom presentations, there is a need for comprehensive measures that adequately assess difficulties in emotion regulation among adults. This paper (a) proposes an integrative conceptualization of emotion regulation as involving not just the modulation of emotional arousal, but also the awareness, understanding, and acceptance of emotions, and the ability to act in desired ways regardless of emotional state; and (b) begins to explore the factor structure and psychometric properties of a new measure, the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). Two samples of undergraduate students completed questionnaire packets. Preliminary findings suggest that the DERS has high internal consistency, good test–retest reliability, and adequate construct and predictive validity.

Research on the relation between social information processing and social adjustment in childhood is reviewed and interpreted within the framework of a reformulated model of human performance and social exchange. This reformulation proves to assimilate almost all previous studies and is a useful heuristic device for organizing the field. The review suggests that overwhelming evidence supports the empirical relation between characteristic processing styles and children's social adjustment, with some aspects of processing (e.g., hostile attributional biases, intention cue detection accuracy, response access patterns, and evaluation of response outcomes) likely to be causal of behaviors that lead to social status and other aspects (e.g., perceived self-competence) likely to be responsive to peer status

A review and reformulation of social information-processing mechanisms in children's social adjustment.

This article reviews the process and outcome research on emotion in psychotherapy. Four distinct types of emotion processes are identified in the literature as useful in therapy, depending on a client’s presenting concerns: emotional awareness and arousal; emotional regulation, active reflection on emotion (meaning making), and emotional transformation. Research findings are summarized to highlight the practical implications of these different emotion processes to psychotherapy. A range of selected treatments from different therapeutic orientations are addressed collectively as different types of emotion-focused, experiential therapies and are compared on the basis of how they work with emotion in session. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT We present an Emotion Focused Therapy perspective on working with grief and bereavement. This perspective considers emotions as a fundamentally adaptive signaling system that provides people with important information about their needs and goals. Thus the focus in working with grief and bereavement in EFT is to access and symbolize people’s adaptive grief around their loss. When this grief is blocked by other emotional states, such as lingering resentments, guilt, or fear of emotional pain, it is important for these other emotions to also be accessed and differentiated from the grief. This emotional processing can be facilitated through an empathic relational stance and experiential interventions which are guided by emotion theory and process diagnosis.

El modelo de formulacion de caso (FC) en Terapia Focalizada en la Emocion (TFE) refleja el modo optimo de trabajar de un terapeuta, que aplica los principios de este modelo. En ese sentido, pone de relieve el peso de las competencias perceptuales del clinico, que debe ser capaz de detectar e identificar los marcadores y micro-marcadores que permiten responder a la experiencia emocional del cliente en el momento y dentro de la sesion. E igualmente afirma la necesidad de contar con una estructura conceptual que de soporte a la co-construccion de un foco terapeutico, de modo tal que el cliente gane agencia respecto a sus propias dificultades, y ofrezca al terapeuta una guia respecto a cual es la base emocional de esas dificultades y como trabajar con ellas. Por otra parte, se pone de manifiesto el caracter humanista y constructivista de este enfoque, haciendo patente el rol del cliente como experto en su propia experiencia, y el del terapeuta como experto en procesos, que pone su competencia de formulacion al servicio del cliente. Se presenta el modelo general de FC en TFE en terminos de sus fases y pasos, y se abordan los aspectos epistemologicos y teoricos mas relevantes: el encaje de la nocion de formulacion en una terapia humanista-experiencial, y la naturaleza abductiva del tipo de razonamiento a traves del cual el terapeuta realiza inferencias.
