Quantum Information with Continuous Variables

The ability to confine and store optical energy in small volumes has implications in fields ranging from cavity quantum electrodynamics to photonics. Of all cavity geometries, micrometre-sized dielectric spherical resonators are the best in terms of their ability to store energy for long periods of time within small volumes. In the sphere, light orbits near the surface, where long confinement times (high Q) effectively wrap a large interaction distance into a tiny volume. This characteristic makes such resonators uniquely suited for studies of nonlinear coupling of light with matter. Early work recognized these attributes through Raman excitation in microdroplets-but microdroplets have not been used in practical applications. Here we demonstrate a micrometre-scale, nonlinear Raman source that has a highly efficient pump-signal conversion (higher than 35%) and pump thresholds nearly 1,000 times lower than shown before. This represents a route to compact, ultralow-threshold sources for numerous wavelength bands that are usually difficult to access. Equally important, this system can provide a compact and simple building block for studying nonlinear optical effects and the quantum aspects of light.

Quantum non-demolition measurements in optics

The preparation, or generation of coherent states, squeezed states, and photon number states is discussed. The quantum noise is evaluated for various simultaneous measurements of two quadrature components: heterodyning, the beam splitter followed by two single quadrature measurements, the parametric amplifier, the (degenerate and/or nondegenerate) four-wave mixer, the Brillouin and Raman amplifiers, and the laser amplifier. A quantum nondemolition measurement followed by a measurement of the conjugate variable is also categorized as a simultaneous measurement. It is shown that, for all of these schemes, the minimum uncertainty product of the measured variables is exactly equal to that required for a simultaneous measurement of two noncommuting variables. On the other hand, measurements of a single quadrature component are noise-free. Such measurements are degenerate heterodyning, degenerate parametric amplification, and cavity degenerate four-wave mixing and photon counting by a photomultiplier or avalanche photodiode. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the quantum-mechanical channel capacity of Shannon are discussed to address the question "How much information can be transmitted by a single photon?" The quantum-mechanical channel capacity provides an upper bound on the achievable information capacity and is ideally realized by photon number states and photon counting detection. Its value is $\frac{\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}}{(\mathrm{ln}2)kT}$ bit per photon. The use of coherent or squeezed states and a simultaneous measurement of two quadrature field components or the measurement of one single quadrature field component does not achieve the ultimate limit.

Preparation, measurement and information capacity of optical quantum states

Nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a single-mode optical fiber is proposed as a method of squeezed state generation. An analysis of the near-degenerate mixing process for forward propagation in realistic fibers is presented along with the theory of an experimentally feasible detection strategy. The effects of the quantum nature of the optical nonlinearity and absorption are modeled by treating the fiber medium as a collection of anharmonic oscillators. Methods of suppressing undesired effects such as stimulated Brillouin scattering are presented as is a technique for providing the phase-shifted local oscillator wave necessary for the detection of squeezing. Preliminary experiments on fiber characterization and the detection of four-wave parametric fluorescence are described.
