A review of mathematical inventory models for reverse logistics and the future of its modeling: An environmental perspective

Fast-fashion retailers such as Zara offer continuously changing assortments and use minimal in-season promotions. Their clearance pricing problem is thus challenging because it involves comparatively more different articles of unsold inventory with less historical price data points. Until 2007, Zara used a manual and informal decision-making process for determining price markdowns. In collaboration with their pricing team, we designed and implemented since an alternative process relying on a formal forecasting model feeding a price optimization model. As part of a controlled field experiment conducted in all Belgian and Irish stores during the 2008 Fall-Winter season, this new process increased clearance revenues by approximately 6%. Zara is currently using this process worldwide for its markdown decisions during clearance sales.

Core acquisition is essential for the success of remanufacturing business. To describe the current status of the quantitative research in Core Acquisition Management and to indicate possible future research directions, a literature review is conducted in this paper about the quantitative modeling in Core Acquisition Management research area. The activities included in Core Acquisition Management are categorized into topics such as acquisition control, forecasting return, return strategies, quality classification and reverse channel design. While most of the studies focus on acquisition control, studies on return strategies and return forecast are relatively limited. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the research papers according to the key assumptions such as, hybrid/non-hybrid remanufacturing systems, acquisition functions, quality classification methods and perfect/imperfect substitutions. In conclusion, studies based on the assumptions of non-hybrid remanufacturing systems and imperfect substitution should gain more attentions, since these situations frequently occur in practice but are less investigated in the existing literature. In addition, empirical validation of the various forms of the acquisition function (relations between acquisition incentives and acquisition volume) should be important for further investigations.

Joint pricing and production decisions for new products with learning curve effects under upstream and downstream trade credits

Advertising and dynamic pricing play key roles in maximizing profit of a firm. In this paper a joint dynamic pricing and advertising problem for perishable products is investigated, where the time-varying demand rate is decreasing in sales price and increasing in goodwill. A dynamic optimization model is proposed to maximize total profit by setting a joint pricing and advertising policy under the constraint of a limited advertising capacity. By solving the dynamic optimization problem on the basis of Pontryagin’s maximum principle, the analytical solutions of the optimal joint dynamic pricing and advertising policy are obtained. Additionally, to highlight the advantage of the joint dynamic strategy, the case of the optimal advertising with static pricing policy is considered. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the validness of the theoretical results, and some managerial implications for the pricing and advertising of the perishable products are provided.

In this paper, a recovery system for perishable items is introduced and developed considering production and remanufacturing capacity constraints The system consists of two inventories, one for serviceable items and the other for returned and recoverable items Taking the production cost, remanufacturing cost, disposal cost, and the loss caused by deterioration into account, the optimal control model is established to minimise the total cost The continuous-time dynamic optimal production, remanufacturing and disposal rates that minimise the total cost are obtained using Pontryagin’s maximum principle Additionally, to highlight the advantage of the dynamic optimal policy, the case of the static optimal policy that does not vary with time is investigated and compared with the dynamic policy It is shown that the dynamic optimal policy is significantly better than the static optimal policy A numerical example is provided to illustrate the proposed methods
