Pyrrolizidine alkaloids in overwintering monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) from mexico

TL;DR: North American populations of the monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus, have been found to contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids and their N-oxides, and Analytical methods (TLC, GC, and GC/MS) have been developed to isolate, quantitate, and structurally elucidate the alkaloid compounds.
Journal ArticleDOI

Overwintering Monarch Butterflies as Food for Insectivorous Birds in Mexico

TL;DR: La presence de cardenolides ou d'autres composes repulsifs empeche probablement un grand nombre d'oiseaux insectivores de se nourrir abondamment sur Danaus.
Journal ArticleDOI

Feeding and Breeding Responses of Five Mice Species to Overwintering Aggregations of the Monarch Butterfly

TL;DR: Stomach content analyses indicated that P. melanotis inside aggregations fed exclusively on monarchs, and the understorey vegetation on grids inside and outside aggregations did not differ significantly, and two hypotheses to explain why only P.melanotis established residency on gridsinside aggregations were tested were rejected.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mimicry: differential advantage of color patterns in the natural environment.

TL;DR: With a new modification of the release and recapture technique in which day-flying male moths are artificially painted, released, and then lured by their females into traps, it has been possible to obtain differential recapture frequencies in natural areas of the Neotropics.
