A novel deep learning based framework for the detection and classification of breast cancer using transfer learning

COVID-19 is a worldwide epidemic, as announced by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. Machine learning (ML) methods can play vital roles in identifying COVID-19 patients by visually analyzing their chest x-ray images. In this paper, a new ML-method proposed to classify the chest x-ray images into two classes, COVID-19 patient or non-COVID-19 person. The features extracted from the chest x-ray images using new Fractional Multichannel Exponent Moments (FrMEMs). A parallel multi-core computational framework utilized to accelerate the computational process. Then, a modified Manta-Ray Foraging Optimization based on differential evolution used to select the most significant features. The proposed method evaluated using two COVID-19 x-ray datasets. The proposed method achieved accuracy rates of 96.09% and 98.09% for the first and second datasets, respectively.

New machine learning method for image-based diagnosis of COVID-19.

Currently, we witness the severe spread of the pandemic of the new Corona virus, COVID-19, which causes dangerous symptoms to humans and animals, its complications may lead to death. Although convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is considered the current state-of-the-art image classification technique, it needs massive computational cost for deployment and training. In this paper, we propose an improved hybrid classification approach for COVID-19 images by combining the strengths of CNNs (using a powerful architecture called Inception) to extract features and a swarm-based feature selection algorithm (Marine Predators Algorithm) to select the most relevant features. A combination of fractional-order and marine predators algorithm (FO-MPA) is considered an integration among a robust tool in mathematics named fractional-order calculus (FO). The proposed approach was evaluated on two public COVID-19 X-ray datasets which achieves both high performance and reduction of computational complexity. The two datasets consist of X-ray COVID-19 images by international Cardiothoracic radiologist, researchers and others published on Kaggle. The proposed approach selected successfully 130 and 86 out of 51 K features extracted by inception from dataset 1 and dataset 2, while improving classification accuracy at the same time. The results are the best achieved on these datasets when compared to a set of recent feature selection algorithms. By achieving 98.7%, 98.2% and 99.6%, 99% of classification accuracy and F-Score for dataset 1 and dataset 2, respectively, the proposed approach outperforms several CNNs and all recent works on COVID-19 images.

COVID-19 image classification using deep features and fractional-order marine predators algorithm.

White Blood Cell (WBC) Leukaemia is caused by excessive production of leukocytes in the bone marrow, and image-based detection of malignant WBCs is important for its detection. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) present the current state-of-the-art for this type of image classification, but their computational cost for training and deployment can be high. We here present an improved hybrid approach for efficient classification of WBC Leukemia. We first extract features from WBC images using VGGNet, a powerful CNN architecture, pre-trained on ImageNet. The extracted features are then filtered using a statistically enhanced Salp Swarm Algorithm (SESSA). This bio-inspired optimization algorithm selects the most relevant features and removes highly correlated and noisy features. We applied the proposed approach to two public WBC Leukemia reference datasets and achieve both high accuracy and reduced computational complexity. The SESSA optimization selected only 1 K out of 25 K features extracted with VGGNet, while improving accuracy at the same time. The results are among the best achieved on these datasets and outperform several convolutional network models. We expect that the combination of CNN feature extraction and SESSA feature optimization could be useful for many other image classification tasks.

Efficient Classification of White Blood Cell Leukemia with Improved Swarm Optimization of Deep Features.

The timely and accurate diagnosis of plant diseases plays an important role in preventing the loss of productivity and loss or reduced quantity of agricultural products. In order to solve such problems, methods based on machine learning can be used. In recent years, deep learning, which is especially widely used in image processing, offers many new applications related to precision agriculture. In this study, we evaluated the performance results using different approaches of nine powerful architectures of deep neural networks for plant disease detection. Transfer learning and deep feature extraction methods are used, which adapt these deep learning models to the problem at hand. The utilized pretrained deep models are considered in the presented work for feature extraction and for further fine-tuning. The obtained features using deep feature extraction are then classified by support vector machine (SVM), extreme learning machine (ELM), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) methods. The experiments are carried out using data consisting of real disease and pest images from Turkey. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and F1-score are all calculated for performance evaluation. The evaluation results show that deep feature extraction and SVM/ELM classification produced better results than transfer learning. In addition, the fc6 layers of the AlexNet, VGG16, and VGG19 models produced better accuracy scores when compared to the other layers.

Plant disease and pest detection using deep learning-based features

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have become one of the state-of-the-art methods for image classification in various domains. For biomedical image classification where the number of training images is generally limited, transfer learning using CNNs is often applied. Such technique extracts generic image features from nature image datasets and these features can be directly adopted for feature extraction in smaller datasets. In this paper, we propose a novel deep neural network architecture based on transfer learning for microscopic image classification. In our proposed network, we concatenate the features extracted from three pretrained deep CNNs. The concatenated features are then used to train two fully-connected layers to perform classification. In the experiments on both the 2D-Hela and the PAP-smear datasets, our proposed network architecture produces significant performance gains comparing to the neural network structure that uses only features extracted from single CNN and several traditional classification methods.

Deep CNNs for microscopic image classification by exploiting transfer learning and feature concatenation

Deep learning and more specifically Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is a cutting edge technique which has been applied to many fields including biomedical image classification. To further improve the classification performance for biomedical images, in this paper, a feature concatenation method and a feature concatenation and ensemble method are proposed to combine several CNNs with different depths and structures. Three datasets, namely 2D Hela dataset, PAP smear dataset, and Hep-2 cell image dataset, are used as benchmarks for testing the proposed methods. It is shown from experiments that the feature concatenation and ensemble method outperforms each individual CNN, and the feature concatenation method, as well as several state-of-the-art methods in terms of classification accuracy.

Biomedical image classification based on a feature concatenation and ensemble of deep CNNs

Non-tumorous facial pigmentation, though not fatal, adversely affects one's quality of life and may indicate concurrence of systemic diseases. Automatic diagnosis method such as voting-based probabilistic discriminant analysis (V-PLDA) has been explored, but the accuracy of classification is not satisfactory due to the limited number of data for training. This paper proposes to use the pre-trained deep learning network of Inception-ResNet-v2 so that information from similar datasets can be utilized. Furthermore, data augmentation using synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) is also applied to make full use of available training data. A clinical dataset of five most common types of non-tumorous facial pigmentation disorders in Asia, namely freckles, lentigines, melasma, Hori's nevus, and nevus of Ota, is used for training and testing. The classification accuracy has shown significant improvement (> 7%) compared to the state-of-the-art method.

Classification of Non-Tumorous Facial Pigmentation Disorders using Deep Learning and SMOTE

Classification of non-tumorous facial pigmentation disorders is an important but overlooked problem. Recently, a voting-based probabilistic linear discriminant analysis (V-PLDA) method was developed to address this problem by extracting hand-craft features from a given image set of rather small size, with limited classification accuracy. In this paper, we propose an improved Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (improved SMOTE) with several parameters tuned to fully utilize the available images. Moreover, transfer learning is applied to reduce the data size requirement of the deep learning model. By combining the improved SMOTE and transfer learning, a classification accuracy gain (10%) is attained compared to the state-of-the-art V-PLDA method.
