Mathematics of Two-Dimensional Turbulence

The pseudomarginal algorithm is a Metropolis–Hastings‐type scheme which samples asymptotically from a target probability density when we can only estimate unbiasedly an unnormalized version of it. In a Bayesian context, it is a state of the art posterior simulation technique when the likelihood function is intractable but can be estimated unbiasedly by using Monte Carlo samples. However, for the performance of this scheme not to degrade as the number T of data points increases, it is typically necessary for the number N of Monte Carlo samples to be proportional to T to control the relative variance of the likelihood ratio estimator appearing in the acceptance probability of this algorithm. The correlated pseudomarginal method is a modification of the pseudomarginal method using a likelihood ratio estimator computed by using two correlated likelihood estimators. For random‐effects models, we show under regularity conditions that the parameters of this scheme can be selected such that the relative variance of this likelihood ratio estimator is controlled when N increases sublinearly with T and we provide guidelines on how to optimize the algorithm on the basis of a non‐standard weak convergence analysis. The efficiency of computations for Bayesian inference relative to the pseudomarginal method empirically increases with T and exceeds two orders of magnitude in some examples.

The correlated pseudomarginal method

An urn contains black and red balls. Let $Z_n$ be the proportion of black balls at time $n$ and $0\leq L L$, then $b_n$ is replaced together with a random number $R_n$ of red balls. Otherwise, no additional balls are added, and $b_n$ alone is replaced. In this paper, we assume $R_n=B_n$. Then, under mild conditions, it is shown that $Z_n\overset{a.s.}\longrightarrow Z$ for some random variable $Z$, and \begin{gather*} D_n:=\sqrt{n}\,(Z_n-Z)\longrightarrow\mathcal{N}(0,\sigma^2)\quad\text{conditionally a.s.} \end{gather*} where $\sigma^2$ is a certain random variance. Almost sure conditional convergence means that \begin{gather*} P\bigl(D_n\in\cdot\mid\mathcal{G}_n\bigr)\overset{weakly}\longrightarrow\mathcal{N}(0,\,\sigma^2)\quad\text{a.s.} \end{gather*} where $P\bigl(D_n\in\cdot\mid\mathcal{G}_n\bigr)$ is a regular version of the conditional distribution of $D_n$ given the past $\mathcal{G}_n$. Thus, in particular, one obtains $D_n\longrightarrow\mathcal{N}(0,\sigma^2)$ stably. It is also shown that $L<Z<U$ a.s. and $Z$ has non-atomic distribution.

Asymptotics for randomly reinforced urns with random barriers

Let µn be a probability measure on the Borel sigma-field on D[0, 1] with respect to Skorohod distance, n = 0. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the following statement are provided. On some probability space, there are D[0, 1]-valued random variables Xn such that Xn tilde µn for all n = 0 and ||Xn - X0|| --> 0 in probability, where ||·|| is the sup-norm. Such conditions do not require µ0 separable under ||·||. Applications to exchangeable empirical processes and to pure jump processes are given as well.

A Skorohod Representation Theorem for Uniform Distance

Let $L$ be a linear space of real bounded random variables on the probability space $(\Omega,\mathcal{A},P_0)$. There is a finitely additive probability $P$ on $\mathcal{A}$, such that $P\sim P_0$ and $E_P(X)=0$ for all $X\in L$, if and only if $c\,E_Q(X)\leq\text{ess sup}(-X)$, $X\in L$, for some constant $c>0$ and (countably additive) probability $Q$ on $\mathcal{A}$ such that $Q\sim P_0$. A necessary condition for such a $P$ to exist is $\bar{L-L_\infty^+}\,\cap L_\infty^+=\{0\}$, where the closure is in the norm-topology. If $P_0$ is atomic, the condition is sufficient as well. In addition, there is a finitely additive probability $P$ on $\mathcal{A}$, such that $P\ll P_0$ and $E_P(X)=0$ for all $X\in L$, if and only if $\text{ess sup}(X)\geq 0$ for all $X\in L$.
