Journal ArticleDOI
Oxidative Stress as an Underlying Contributor in the Development of Chronic Complications in Diabetes Mellitus
Suziy de M. Bandeira,Lucas José Sá da Fonseca,Glaucevane da Silva Guedes,Luiza A. Rabelo,Marília O. F. Goulart,Sandra Mary Lima Vasconcelos +5 more
TL;DR: The present review briefly addresses the role of hyperglycemia in OS, describes some of the more commonly used biomarkers of oxidative/nitrosative damage and includes selected examples of studies which evaluated OS biomarkers in patients with diabetes, pointing to the relevance of such biological components in general oxidative stress status of diabetes mellitus carriers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Characterization of Blood Oxidative Stress in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients: Increase in Lipid Peroxidation and SOD Activity
Suziy de M. Bandeira,Glaucevane da Silva Guedes,Lucas José Sá da Fonseca,André Simões Pires,Daniel Pens Gelain,José Cláudio Fonseca Moreira,Luiza A. Rabelo,Sandra Mary Lima Vasconcelos,Marília O. F. Goulart +8 more
TL;DR: Present data strongly suggest the involvement of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of diabetes, revealing that the increased lipid peroxidation has a close relationship with high glucose levels, as observed by the fasting glucose and HbA1c levels.
Journal ArticleDOI
Oxidative Stress in Rheumatoid Arthritis: What the Future Might Hold regarding Novel Biomarkers and Add-On Therapies.
TL;DR: The present review focuses on the binomial rheumatoid arthritis-oxidative stress, bringing insights into their pathophysiological relationships, as well as the implications of potential diagnostic oxidative stress biomarkers and therapeutic interventions directed to the oxidative status in patients with rheumatic arthritis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Oxidative status imbalance in patients with metabolic syndrome: role of the myeloperoxidase/hydrogen peroxide axis.
Lucas José Sá da Fonseca,Valéria Nunes-Souza,Glaucevane da Silva Guedes,Glauber Schettino-Silva,Marco Ant^onio Mota-Gomes,Luiza A. Rabelo +5 more
TL;DR: Metabolic Syndrome patients exhibited evident systemic redox imbalance compared to controls, with the possible participation of the myeloperoxidase/hydrogen peroxide axis as a contributor in lipid peroxidation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Arginase as a Critical Prooxidant Mediator in the Binomial Endothelial Dysfunction-Atherosclerosis.
Luiza A. Rabelo,Luiza A. Rabelo,Fernanda O. Ferreira,Valéria Nunes-Souza,Valéria Nunes-Souza,Lucas José Sá da Fonseca,Marília O. F. Goulart +6 more
TL;DR: The present review focuses on the role of arginase in endothelial function and its participation in the establishment of atherosclerotic lesions, discussing the main regulatory mechanisms of the enzyme, also highlighting the potential development of pharmacological strategies in related cardiovascular diseases.
