Poly (lactic acid) blends: Processing, properties and applications.

Polymeric packaging protects food during storage and transportation, and withstands mechanical and thermal stresses from high-temperature conventional retort or microwave-assisted food processing treatments. Chemical compounds that are incorporated within polymeric packaging materials to improve functionality, may interact with food components during processing or storage and migrate into the food. Once these compounds reach a specified limit, food quality and safety may be jeopardized. Possible chemical migrants include plasticizers, antioxidants, thermal stabilizers, slip compounds, and monomers. Chemical migration from food packaging is affected by a number of parameters including the nature and complexity of food, the contact time and temperature of the system, the type of packaging contact layer, and the properties of the migrants. Researchers study the migration of food-packaging compounds by exposing food or food-simulating liquids to conventional and microwave heating and storage conditions, primarily through chromatographic or spectroscopic methods; from these data, they develop kinetic and risk assessment models. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the migration of chemical compounds into food or food simulants exposed to various heat treatments and storage conditions, as well as a discussion of regulatory issues.

Migration of Chemical Compounds from Packaging Polymers during Microwave, Conventional Heat Treatment, and Storage.

Recently, the demands for biodegradable and renewable materials for packaging applications have increased tremendously. This rise in demand is connected to the growing environmental concerns over the extensive use of synthetic and non-biodegradable polymeric packaging, polyethylene in particular. The performance of biodegradable polymers is discussed in this review, with a particular focus on the blends of starch and other polymers. Furthermore, in food packaging industry, microbial activities are of great concern. Therefore, incorporation of antimicrobial agents or polymers to produce barrier-enhanced or active packaging materials provides an attractive option for protecting food from microorganism development and spread. Additionally, the barrier, mechanical and other properties of biodegradable polymers are discussed. Lastly, the existing and potential applications for bioactive coatings on antimicrobial packaging materials are also addressed.

Bionanocomposite films based on plasticized PLA PHB/cellulose nanocrystal blends

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is the most used biopolymer for food packaging applications. Several strategies have been made to improve PLA properties for extending its applications in the packaging field. Melt blending approaches are gaining considerable interest since they are easy, cost-effective and readily available processing technologies at the industrial level. With a similar melting temperature and high crystallinity, poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) represents a good candidate to blend with PLA. The ability of PHB to act as a nucleating agent for PLA improves its mechanical resistance and barrier performance. With the dual objective to improve PLAPHB processing performance and to obtain stretchable materials, plasticizers are frequently added. Current trends to enhance PLA-PHB miscibility are focused on the development of composite and nanocomposites. PLA-PHB blends are also interesting for the controlled release of active compounds in the development of active packaging systems. This review explains the most relevant processing aspects of PLA-PHB based blends such as the influence of polymers molecular weight, the PLA-PHB composition as well as the thermal stability. It also summarizes the recent developments in PLA-PHB formulations with an emphasis on their performance with interest in the sustainable food packaging field. PLA-PHB blends shows highly promising perspectives for the replacement of traditional petrochemical based polymers currently used for food packaging.

On the Use of PLA-PHB Blends for Sustainable Food Packaging Applications

Active biobased packaging materials based on poly(lactic acid)-poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PLA–PHB) blends were prepared by melt blending and fully characterized. Catechin incorporation, as antioxidant compound, enhanced the thermal stability, whereas its release was improved by the addition of acetyl(tributyl citrate) (ATBC) as plasticizer. Whereas the incorporation of ATBC resulted in a reduction of elastic modulus and hardness, catechin addition produced more rigid materials due to hydrogen-bonding interactions between catechin hydroxyl groups and carbonyl groups of PLA and PHB. The quantification of catechin released into a fatty food simulant and the antioxidant effectiveness after the release process were demonstrated. The effect of the materials’ exposure to a food simulant was also investigated. Plasticized poly(lactic acid)-poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PLA-PHB) blends incorporated with catechin intended for active food-packaging applications.

A chromatographic method using ultra performance LC with ultraviolet spectrophotometry detection system (UPLC-UV-visible (UV/Vis)) (UPLC, ultra performance LC) was developed to determine Chimassorb 944 and Tinuvin 770, high- and low-molecular mass hindered amine light stabilizers, respectively. The use of a bridge ethylene hybrid-based particles C18 UPLC column, being compatible with a buffered mobile phase adjusted to pH 11.5, was used to achieve a satisfactory elution of possible non-ionizated units of polymeric Chimassorb 944. In addition, a HPLC with positive ion mode ESI and hybrid linear ion trap (LTQ) Fourier transform (FT) Orbitrap MS detection system (HPLC-UV/Vis-ESI-LTQ(FT)Orbitrap) was used for screening and identification purposes. Reliable determinations of monomeric units of Chimassorb 944 and molecule of Tinuvin 770 were achieved by HPLC-ESI(+)-LTQ FT Orbitrap MS method using scan mode. Quality parameters of UPLC-UV/Vis method were evaluated. Obtained LODs and LOQs were 3.41 and 11.4 mg/L for Tinuvin 770 and 0.83 and 2.78 mg/L for Chimassorb 944, respectively. Satisfactory quality parameters of this chromatography method provided the chance to count on a good tool to know the compliance with legal requirements.

Liquid chromatographic methods to analyze hindered amines light stabilizers (HALS) levels to improve safety in polyolefins

An analytical method for the simultaneous separation and quantitation of ten colorants and six antioxidants used as polymer additives has been developed by transferring chromatographic conditions from two independent HPLC methods to a single ultraperformance liquid chromatography system. An experimental design was carried out to achieve the best elution gradient for separation of all the studied compounds with the best possible peak resolution and in the shortest possible analysis time. The new method gives good values for the analytical quality parameters evaluated.
