Digital control of dynamic systems

The large-scale integration of power electronic-based systems poses new challenges to the stability and power quality of modern power grids. The wide timescale and frequency-coupling dynamics of electronic power converters tend to bring in harmonic instability in the form of resonances or abnormal harmonics in a wide frequency range. This paper provides a systematic analysis of harmonic stability in the future power-electronic-based power systems. The basic concept and phenomena of harmonic stability are elaborated first. It is pointed out that the harmonic stability is a breed of small-signal stability problems, featuring the waveform distortions at the frequencies above and below the fundamental frequency of the system. The linearized models of converters and system analysis methods are then discussed. It reveals that the linearized models of ac–dc converters can be generalized to the harmonic transfer function, which is mathematically derived from linear time-periodic system theory. Lastly, future challenges on the system modeling and analysis of harmonic stability in large-scale power electronic based power grids are summarized.

Harmonic Stability in Power Electronic-Based Power Systems: Concept, Modeling, and Analysis

The output impedance of a power converter plays an important role in the stability assessment of the converter. The impedance can be expressed in different frames such as the stationary frame (phase domain) or in the synchronous frame ( dq domain). To treat the three-phase system like a single-phase system, the system can be divided into positive and negative sequences in the phase domain. This paper demonstrates that there exist couplings between the positive and negative sequences, even in a balanced system due to the PLL, which is important for synchronization. Further it will be shown that even though these couplings are very small in magnitude, they are important in the stability of the converter.

This paper focuses on reviewing grid connection of large offshore wind farms (OWFs) employing current state-of-the-art voltage source converter based high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) technologies A brief review of the VSC-HVDC evolvement is presented, followed by an overview of the advantages of employing VSC-HVDC for grid connection of large OWFs remotely located from the shore A detailed description of the topologies is provided, and simulation results are presented in order to illustrate some of the main features of the most popular multi-level VSC-HVDC topology Based on the review, it is found that there are currently three vendors of the VSC-HVDC Furthermore, it is found that the VSC-HVDC is a promising technology for grid connection of remotely located OWFs and is going to be the preferred choice of remotely located OWF grid connection in eg the UK

Review on multi-level voltage source converter based HVDC technologies for grid connection of large offshore wind farms

This paper addresses the small-signal stability of voltage-controlled modular multilevel converters (MMCs) feeding linear ac systems. By using the harmonic state-space (HSS) modeling method, the ac-side impedance matrices (IMs) of the MMC with the open-loop and closed-loop voltage control are derived and their relationship is also explicitly given. It is revealed that the ac voltage regulator has the same effect on the centered diagonal element of the IM of the MMC as that of two-level voltage-source converters (VSCs). Moreover, when the MMC is feeding linear ac loads, the return-ratio matrix of the cascaded system has an eigenvalue that is equal to the ratio between the centered diagonal element of the IM of the MMC and the load impedance, which, consequently, facilitates the stability evaluation by checking that single-input single-output impedance ratio as a necessary condition. These findings also provide physical insights into the subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) of the voltage-controlled MMC with the proportional-resonant (PR) regulator, and a proportional-integral-resonant (PIR) regulator is further introduced to mitigate the SSO. Finally, time-domain simulations verify the effectiveness of the theoretical analysis.

Impedance-Based Stability Analysis of Voltage-Controlled MMCs Feeding Linear AC Systems

A workshop on power system harmonics was organized in Stockholm in January 2014. On the agenda was among others a discussion on what are the main issues on harmonics at the moment and in the near future. Some of the issues discussed at that workshop are presented in this paper and its companion paper. In this paper the following issues will be addressed: the appearance of emission at higher frequencies (supraharmonics); the need for new and improved standards; measurement issues and data analysis.
