A liquid phase processing method for the fabrication of bulk YBa2Cu3Ox superconductors with large current carrying capacity has been developed. Slow cooling through the peritectic transformation (1030–980 °C) has been shown to control the microstructure of these superconductors. A cooling rate of 1 °C/h in this temperature range has yielded a microstructure with long plate type, thick grains oriented over a wide area. Current density up to 18 500 A/cm2 has been obtained by continuous direct current measurements and in excess of 62 000 A/cm2 with pulse current of 10 ms duration and 75 000 A/cm2 using 1 ms pulse. The strong magnetic field dependence observed in sintered bulk 1‐2‐3 superconductors is also minimized to a large extent where a current density in excess of 37 000 A/cm2 is obtained in a field of 6000 G.

High current density in bulk YBa2Cu3Ox superconductor

In the past few years magneto-optical flux imaging (MOI) has come to take an increasing role in the investigation and understanding of critical current densities in high-Tc superconductors (HTS). This has been related to the significant progress in quantitative high-resolution magneto-optical imaging of flux distributions together with the model-independent determination of the corresponding current distributions. We review in this article the magneto-optical imaging technique and experiments on thin films, single crystals, polycrystalline bulk ceramics, tapes and melt-textured HTS materials and analyse systematically the properties determining the spatial distribution and the magnitude of the supercurrents. First of all, the current distribution is determined by the sample geometry. Due to the boundary conditions at the sample borders, the current distribution in samples of arbitrary shape splits up into domains of nearly uniform parallel current flow which are separated by current domain boundaries, where the current streamlines are sharply bent. Qualitatively, the current pattern is described by the Bean model; however, changes due to a spatially dependent electric field distribution which is induced by flux creep or flux flow have to be taken into account. For small magnetic fields, the Meissner phase coexists with pinned vortex phases and the geometry-dependent Meissner screening currents contribute to the observed current patterns. The influence of additional factors on the current domain patterns are systematically analysed: local magnetic field dependence of jc(B), current anisotropy, inhomogeneities and local transport properties of grain boundaries. We then continue to an overview of the current distribution and current-limiting factors of materials, relevant to technical applications like melt-textured samples, coated conductors and tapes. Finally, a selection of magneto-optical experiments which give direct insight into vortex pinning and depinning mechanisms are reviewed.

Magneto-optical studies of current distributions in high-Tc superconductors

Model for flux creep in high Tc superconductors

Contact surface resistivities (product of contact resistance and area) in the 10−10 Ω cm2 range have been obtained for both silver and gold contacts to high Tc superconductors. This is a reduction by about eight orders of magnitude from the contact resistivity of indium solder connections. The contact resistivity is low enough to be considered for both on‐chip and package interconnect applications. The contacts were formed by sputter depositing either silver or gold at low temperatures (<100 °C) on a clean surface of Y1 Ba2 Cu3 O7−δ (YBCO) and later annealing the contacts in oxygen. Annealing temperature characteristics show that for bulk‐sintered YBCO samples there is a sharp decrease in contact resistivity after annealing silver/YBCO contacts in oxygen for 1 h at temperatures above ∼500 °C and gold/YBCO contacts for 1 h above ∼600 °C. High Tc superconductor/noble‐metal contacts with surface resistivities in the 10−10 Ω cm2 range

Measurements of the transport critical‐current density (Jc), magnetization Jc, and magnetoresistance in a number of bulk sintered samples of Y1Ba2Cu3Ox from several different laboratories indicate that the transport Jc is limited by weak‐link regions between high Jc regions. The weak‐link Jc has a Josephson character, decreasing by two orders of magnitude as the magnetic field is increased from 0.1 to 10 mT at 77 K. An examination of the grain‐boundary region in Y1Ba2Cu3Ox shows no observable impurities or second phases to the scale of the [001] lattice planes (∼12 A). The effect of intrinsic conduction anisotropy is discussed. A current‐transfer model is proposed in which weak conduction along the c axis plays a role in limiting Jc at grain boundaries. Orienting the grains in the powder state during processing may result in enhanced transport Jc in bulk conductors.
