This book is a companion text to Active Control of Sound by P.A. Nelson and S.J. Elliott, also published by Academic Press. It summarizes the principles underlying active vibration control and its practical applications by combining material from vibrations, mechanics, signal processing, acoustics, and control theory. The emphasis of the book is on the active control of waves in structures, the active isolation of vibrations, the use of distributed strain actuators and sensors, and the active control of structurally radiated sound. The feedforward control of deterministic disturbances, the active control of structural waves and the active isolation of vibrations are covered in detail, as well as the more conventional work on modal feedback. The principles of the transducers used as actuateors and sensors for such control strategies are also given an in-depth description. The reader will find particularly interesting the two chapters on the active control of sound radiation from structures: active structural acoustic control. The reason for controlling high frequency vibration is often to prevent sound radiation, and the principles and practical application of such techniques are presented here for both plates and cylinders. The volume is written in textbook style and is aimed at students, practicing engineers, and researchers.

Ultra-precision engineering in lithographic exposure equipment for the semiconductor industry

This paper studies the benefits of using additional actuators in the design of motion systems. The motion part and disturbance attenuation part require different placement of the actuators to work optimally, which is not possible in traditional designs. Allowing extra actuators in the design makes it possible to overcome this limitation. In this way the controllability of the internal dynamics of the structure can be both maximized for feedback and minimized for feedforward. By tuning a static relation between the actuators it is possible to minimize the excitation of resonances in the feedforward path. Feedback controller design is based on an existing vibration control strategy, which enables placement of the bandwidth beyond the lowest resonance frequencies. The idea is demonstrated by the example of a levitated beam.

In this paper an introduction and motivation is given towards an integrated design approach for motion systems using overactuation. Looking to motion systems and their history, the current status of mechatronic motion systems is discussed. One of the main aspects that limit performance in mechanical systems is the presence of vibrations. An overview is presented of several passive and active methods to solve vibration problems. Active vibration control can be regarded as a form of overactuation to improve system performance. It is expected that an integrated overactuated design approach will be advantageous over traditional vibration control solutions, which often make use of adaptations after the mechanical design has been completed. Before a framework for an integrated design approach can be posed, different strategies of overactuation must be investigated. To study the closed-loop characteristics of resonances in mechanical systems with more actuators more closely, some first explorations of a dual-input single-output motion system are made.
