The fifth generation (5G) wireless network technology is to be standardized by 2020, where main goals are to improve capacity, reliability, and energy efficiency, while reducing latency and massively increasing connection density. An integral part of 5G is the capability to transmit touch perception type real-time communication empowered by applicable robotics and haptics equipment at the network edge. In this regard, we need drastic changes in network architecture including core and radio access network (RAN) for achieving end-to-end latency on the order of 1 ms. In this paper, we present a detailed survey on the emerging technologies to achieve low latency communications considering three different solution domains: 1) RAN; 2) core network; and 3) caching. We also present a general overview of major 5G cellular network elements such as software defined network, network function virtualization, caching, and mobile edge computing capable of meeting latency and other 5G requirements.

A Survey on Low Latency Towards 5G: RAN, Core Network and Caching Solutions

To alleviate the problem of scarce spectrum resources and meet the ever-increasing of mobile broadband data traffic demands, Licensed Assisted Access (LAA)-Long Term Evolution (LTE), operating in the unlicensed spectrum, is a promising solution. Considering that the unlicensed spectrum is shared by a few incumbent systems, such as IEEE 802.11 (i.e., WiFi), one main target is to guarantee the friendly and harmonious coexistence of LTE with other wireless systems in the unlicensed spectrum. Both listen-before-talk (LBT) and duty cycle methods are regarded as effective ways to solve the coexistence problem in academia and industry so far. Although there are a large number of theoretical researches on LTE in unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U), field trail results are still lacking. In this paper, an experimental testing platform is deployed to model the realistic environment. This paper focuses on three aspects. First, a typical indoor field trial scenario in 5.8 GHz unlicensed bands is deployed, and the performance of LTE-U and WiFi, including coverage and capacity, is evaluated. Specifically, a methodology to determine the proper clear channel assessment energy detection (CCA-ED) threshold for LTE-U is proposed to implement the friendly coexistence between LTE-U and WiFi systems. Second, supplementary downlink (SDL) and Cell ON/OFF mechanisms are investigated to verify the fair coexistence between LAA and WiFi in the unlicensed spectrum. Third, the Enhanced Cell ON/OFF scheme, which introduces Clear to Send (CTS)-to-Self (CTS2S) message, is discussed and evaluated. Based on the built testbed, we obtain threefold conclusions. First of all, introducing LTE into unlicensed spectrums can greatly improve the spectrum efficiency and optimize wireless resources. Furthermore, test results and analyses show that a proper CCA-ED threshold is necessary for coexisting friendly and fairly among different systems, and experiments are also provided to validate the feasibility of the suggested method in various scenarios. Second, experimental results show that SDL mechanism guarantees relatively friendly and harmonious coexistence between LAA and WiFi only in the sparse scenario, while basic Cell ON/OFF mechanism is more effective to ensure coexistence between LAA and WiFi than the SDL. Finally, with the introduction of CTS2S message, the Enhanced Cell ON/OFF scheme is able to achieve more peaceful coexistence between LTE and WiFi users employed in the same bands compared with the Basic Cell ON/OFF scheme.

Opportunistic Coexistence of LTE and WiFi for Future 5G System: Experimental Performance Evaluation and Analysis

In smart cities, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) of the smart grid facilitates automated metering, control and monitoring of power distribution by employing a wireless network. Due to this wireless nature of communication, there exist potential threats to the data privacy in AMI. Decoding the energy consumption reading, injecting false data/command signals and jamming the networks are some hazardous measures against this technology. Since a smart meter possesses limited memory and computational capability, AMI demands a light, but robust security scheme. In this paper, we propose a localization-based key management system for meter data encryption. Data are encrypted by the key associated with the coordinate of the meter and a random key index. The encryption keys are managed and distributed by a trusted third party (TTP). Localization of the meter is proposed by a method based on received signal strength (RSS) using the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE). The received packets are decrypted at the control center with the key mapped with the key index and the meter’s coordinates. Additionally, we propose the k-nearest neighbors (kNN) algorithm for node/meter authentication, capitalizing further on data transmission security. Finally, we evaluate the security strength of a data packet numerically for our method.

Securing Metering Infrastructure of Smart Grid: A Machine Learning and Localization Based Key Management Approach

Increasing capacity demands in emerging wireless technologies are expected to be met by network densification and spectrum bands open to multiple technologies. These will, in turn, increase the level of interference and also result in more complex inter-technology interactions, which will need to be managed through spectrum sharing mechanisms. Consequently, novel spectrum sharing mechanisms should be designed to allow spectrum access for multiple technologies, while efficiently utilizing the spectrum resources overall. Importantly, it is not trivial to design such efficient mechanisms, not only due to technical aspects, but also due to regulatory and business model constraints. In this survey we address spectrum sharing mechanisms for wireless inter-technology coexistence by means of a technology circle that incorporates in a unified, system-level view the technical and non-technical aspects. We thus systematically explore the spectrum sharing design space consisting of parameters at different layers. Using this framework, we present a literature review on inter-technology coexistence with a focus on wireless technologies with equal spectrum access rights, i.e., (i) primary/primary, (ii) secondary/secondary, and (iii) technologies operating in a spectrum commons. Moreover, we reflect on our literature review to identify possible spectrum sharing design solutions and performance evaluation approaches useful for future coexistence cases. Finally, we discuss spectrum sharing design challenges and suggest future research directions.

Survey of Spectrum Sharing for Inter-Technology Coexistence

The radio frequency spectrum is classified as licensed and license-exempt/unlicensed spectrum. A traditional cellular communications system (e.g., LTE) operates unexceptionally on licensed spectrum. This paper explains the concept of cellular communications on both licensed and license-exempt carriers under a unified cellular architecture. It addresses the key challenges and describes a baseline communication framework that enables such operation, including carrier sensing based on listen-before-talk, discontinuous transmissions with limited channel occupation time, synchronization between licensed and license-exempt carriers, and coexistence with other incumbent systems like WiFi. These concept and techniques are further exemplified by a practical system, the LTE license-assisted access, including the downlink featured in Release 13 LTE and the most recent addition of uplink in Release 14 LTE.

LTE on License-Exempt Spectrum

In order to cope with the phenomenal growth of mobile data traffic, unlicensed spectrum can be utilized by the Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular systems. However, ensuring fair coexistence with WiFi is a mandatory requirement. In one approach, periodically configurable transmission gaps can be used to facilitate a coexistence between WiFi and LTE. In this paper, a Multi-Armed Bandit (MAB) based dynamic duty cycle selection method is proposed for configuration of transmission gaps ensuring a better coexistence for both technologies. Then the concept is further strengthened with downlink power control mechanism using the same algorithm leading to a high energy efficiency and interference reduction. Performance results are given for different user equipment and WiFi station densities in which it is shown that significant improvements in overall throughput and energy efficiency can be achieved.

Multi-armed bandit for LTE-U and WiFi coexistence in unlicensed bands

The surge of mobile devices such as smartphone and tablets requires additional capacity. To achieve ubiquitous and high data rate Internet connectivity, effective spectrum sharing and utilization of the wireless spectrum carry critical importance. In this paper, we consider the use of unlicensed LTE (LTE-U) technology in the 3.5 GHz Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) band and develop a multiarmed bandit (MAB) based spectrum sharing technique for a smooth coexistence with WiFi. In particular, we consider LTE-U to operate as a General Authorized Access (GAA) user; hereby MAB is used to adaptively optimize the transmission duty cycle of LTE-U transmissions. Additionally, we incorporate downlink power control which yields a high energy efficiency and interference suppression. Simulation results demonstrate a significant improvement in the aggregate capacity (approximately 33%) and cell-edge throughput of coexisting LTE-U and WiFi networks for different base station densities and user densities.

CBRS Spectrum Sharing between LTE-U and WiFi: A Multiarmed Bandit Approach

Device and network coordination is critical for efficient radio resource (RR) utilization while meeting Quality of Service (QoS) requirements in heavily congested future heterogeneous wireless networks featured with 3-Dimensional (3D) small cells (SCs). Device and network coordination assisted opportunistic and coordinated use of RRs in distinct bands could dramatically improve the spectrum utilization in these networks. In this study, overall communication performance enhancement through better utilization of opportunistically available spatially distributed RRs in a 3D SC is addressed considering two co-located networks operated in licensed band (LB) and unlicensed band (UB) while jointly accounting for several related factors like 3D spatial positions and QoS requirements of the devices. To confront this problem, a device and network coordination assisted solution is developed using Q-learning and Slotted-ALOHA principles. Then, to maintain performance standards, device and network coordination aided scheduling, power control and access prioritization schemes are discussed. Subsequently, regret based learning assisted algorithm is presented for the UB to optimally utilize RRs. In these solutions, both device-network and network-network interactions are considered. In results, approximately 75% better overall coordination efficiency over conventional methods is shown at the initial iterations for the scenarios with the highest device density demonstrating attractive performance.
