ABS is an engineering plastic that has butadiene part uniformly distributed over the acrylonitrile-styrene matrix. It possesses excellent toughness, good dimensional stability, easy processing ability, chemical resistance, and cheapness. However, it suffers from inherent shortcomings in terms of mechanical strength and vulnerability to environmental conditions. Furthermore, it is non-conducting and easily fretted. Plating on ABS can serve to enhance the strength and structural integrity as well as to improve durability and thermal resistance resulting in metallic properties on the ABS material. ABS is described as the most suitable candidate for plating because it is possible to deposit an adherent metal coating on it by only the use of chemical pretreatment process and without the use of any mechanical abrasion. This article aims to review the history of ABS plastics, properties of ABS, processes and mechanisms of plating, and studies of plating on ABS involving mainly eco-friendly methods of plating by discussing the literature published in recent years. The details of electroplating of ABS carried out in the authors’ laboratory are also presented.

Plating on acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) plastic: a review

Literature on electroless Ni-P deposition, in recent decades, has dwelled primarily on surface engineering and corrosion-resistant applications. By contrast, we have many research articles devoted to the engineering aspects of the electroless Ni-P depositions and their technology. The present article deals with the development of electroless Ni-P bath, advantages and mechanisms of deposition, and applications of the Ni-P deposits. We also present a comparison of the properties of electroless Ni-P and Ni-B as well as the recent developments in nickel-phosphorous research. We attempt to review these in a detailed manner. We also briefly discuss the future developments of electroless Ni-P.

An overall aspect of electroless Ni-P depositions—A review article

Electroless nickel plating has undergone a sea change over the last decade. These coatings find wide application in the automotive and aerospace industries. As a means of overcoming problems associated with corrosion, abrasive wear and for the metallizing of nonconducting materials, this technology is rapidly expanding. Of all the electroless nickel plating processes available, the most widely used is the nickel phosphorous alloy acid bath. The main objective of our project is to codeposit TiO 2 with Ni-P at different concentrations and to study the mechanical and corrosion properties of the deposits.

Electroless Ni-P-TiO2-based composite coatings for surface engineering applications

Over the least few decades, electroless Ni-P-based composite coatings have undergones significant changes in processing that have positively affected metal-finishing techniques. Many new techniques have been developed based on the acid bath coating process. These electroless Ni-P coating emthods have superior properties compared to electrodepositon coating. For example, improved coatings unitformity can be achieved with these newer methods.
