Energy security and global warming concern are the two main driving forces for the global alcohol development that also have the effort to animate the agro-industry. Generally, alcohol and ether fuels are produced from several sources and can be produced locally. Almost all alcohol fuels have similar combustion and ignition characteristics to existing known mineral fuels. Mainly the ether fuels (MTBE and DME) are used as additives at low blending ratio to enhance the octane number and oxygen content of gasoline. The addition of alcohol and ether fuels to gasoline lead to a complete combustion due to the higher oxygen content, thereby leads to increased combustion efficiency and decreased engine emissions. The objectives of this paper are to systematically review the use of alcohols and ethers including butanol, methanol, ethanol, and fusel oil, MTBE, and DME as fuels in SI engine. Also, the current study has investigated the effects of performance (brake torque, brake power, BSFC, effective efficiency, and EGT), emissions (CO, CO2, NOx and HC) and combustion characteristics of SI engine with alcohol and ether. The increase in engine performance could be attained with an increased compression ratio along with the use of alcohol fuels which have a higher-octane value. Furthermore, alcohol and ether burn very cleanly than regular gasoline and produce lesser carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). On the other hand, the energy value of alcohol and ether fuels is approximately 30% lower than gasoline; thereby the specific fuel consumption (SFC) will increase simultaneously when using alcohol and ether as a fuel. Finally, this paper also discusses the impacts of alcohol on engine vibration, engine noise, and potential to be used as a gasoline octane enhancer. Alcohol can be used as a pure fuel in spark ignition engine, but it requires some modifications to the engine.

Alcohol and ether as alternative fuels in spark ignition engine: A review

Alcohol fuels have some significant advantages over other alternative fuels, including the ability to work in existing engines as well as the capability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This paper analyses the performance and emissions of compression and spark ignition engine using of alcohol fuels from the first aliphatic alcohol family; methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol. The literature relevant to methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol was reviewed and summarized to demonstrate its viability as an alternative fuel. The fuel properties of methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol present the most important properties that allow such fuels as suitable candidates as an alternative fuel for compression and spark ignition engines. The performance and engine emissions indicators such as brake torque, brake power, BTE, BSFC NOx, PM, CO, CO2, HC and soot have been evaluated regarding tone at diesel and gasoline fuels. The results showed that alcohol fuels give different results to engine performance and emissions. Surprisingly, some research yield favorable results to the alcohol as compared to neat diesel and gasoline fuels. It can be concluded that methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol are capable of reducing harmful engine exhaust emissions, however,at the expense of lower engine performance characteristics.

Response Surface Methodology (RSM) Based Multi-Objective Optimization of Fusel Oil-Gasoline Blends at Different Water Content in SI Engine

Alternative fuels are becoming important due to higher energy demands but with limited fuel supplies. Fusel oil is a by-product obtained through the fermentation of some agricultural products such as beets, cones, grains, potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice and wheat. Fusel oil can be used as a clean and high-efficiency spark ignition fuel with a reduced NOx. The energy value of fusel oil is near to other alternative combustible types and the limited number of researches on the use of fusel oil as an alcohol derivative in spark ignition engines constitute to the base of this research. The literature relevant to fusel oil use was reviewed and summarized to demonstrate the viability of fusel oil as an alternative fuel from renewable energy source. The aim of this paper was to review the potential for the utilization of fusel oil as a candidate for an alternative fuel for spark-ignition engine, while also describing the production and utilization of fusel oil generally. The octane number and density of fusel oil present the most important properties that make fusel oil a candidate for an alternative fuel for SI fuel engines. It was observed that the octane number increased with the increase in percentage of fusel oil in the blend tests. It was also noted that when the fusel oil was used as a blend with gasoline, the engine torque was slightly increased and the volumetric efficiency and specific fuel consumption also increased. The hydro-carbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions were averagely increased. Furthermore, knocking and nitrogen oxides (NOx) were observed to decrease when fusel oil was used. On the other hand, negative effects occurred in the engine performance caused by the higher water content in fusel oil.

Using fusel oil as a blend in gasoline to improve SI engine efficiencies: A comprehensive review

Adoption of hydrogen energy as an alternative to fossil fuels could be a major step towards decarbonising and fulfilling the needs of the energy sector. Hydrogen can be an ideal alternative for many fields compared with other alternatives. However, there are many potential environmental challenges that are not limited to production and distribution systems, but they also focus on how hydrogen is used through fuel cells and combustion pathways. The use of hydrogen has received little attention in research and policy, which may explain the widely claimed belief that nothing but water is released as a by-product when hydrogen energy is used. We adopt systems thinking and system dynamics approaches to construct a conceptual model for hydrogen energy, with a special focus on the pathways of hydrogen use, to assess the potential unintended consequences, and possible interventions; to highlight the possible growth of hydrogen energy by 2050. The results indicate that the combustion pathway may increase the risk of the adoption of hydrogen as a combustion fuel, as it produces NOx, which is a key air pollutant that causes environmental deterioration, which may limit the application of a combustion pathway if no intervention is made. The results indicate that the potential range of global hydrogen demand is rising, ranging from 73 to 158 Mt in 2030, 73 to 300 Mt in 2040, and 73 to 568 Mt in 2050, depending on the scenario presented.
