Journal ArticleDOI

Role of chronic low-level lead exposure in the ætiology of mental retardation

TL;DR: It is concluded that lead contamination of water may be one factor in the multifactorial aetiology of mental retardation and that every effort should be made to reduce the lead content of drinking-water.
Journal ArticleDOI

Blood-lead and hypertension

TL;DR: High blood-pressure is associated with high blood-lead levels, which might explain the high prevalence of cardiovascular disease in the area, according to a study of hypertensives in the West of Scotland.
Journal ArticleDOI

Blood-cadmium in hypertensives and normotensives

TL;DR: Data do not support the hypothesis that cadmium is involved in the development of hypertension in man, although the blood-cadmium level was significantly higher in smokers as compared to non-smokers.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effect of calcium on lead absorption in rats.

TL;DR: The result suggest that, above 4 mmol of administered calcium, residual lead absorption is unaffected by increasing gastrointestinal calcium concentrations, and CaCl2 and calcium glycerophosphate were found to be most effective in decreasing lead absorption when administered immediately before lead dosage.
Journal ArticleDOI

Lead in drinking water in soft water areas—health hazards

TL;DR: Significant regressions were found between water lead and blood lead concentrations and there were in addition increased lead concentrations found in houses using copper piping joined with lead soldered joints.
