Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) is an optimization method inspired by the theory of Newtonian gravity in physics. Till now, many variants of GSA have been introduced, most of them are motivated by gravity-related theories such as relativity and astronomy. On the one hand, to solve different kinds of optimization problems, modified versions of GSA have been presented such as continuous (real), binary, discrete, multimodal, constraint, single-objective, and multi-objective GSA. On the other hand, to tackle the difficulties in real-world problems, the efficiency of GSA has been improved using specialized operators, hybridization, local search, and designing the self-adaptive algorithms. Researchers have utilized GSA to solve various engineering optimization problems in diverse fields of applications ranging from electrical engineering to bioinformatics. Here, we discussed a comprehensive investigation of GSA and a brief review of GSA developments in solving different engineering problems to build up a global picture and to open the mind to explore possible applications. We also made a number of suggestions that can be undertaken to help move the area forward.

Outdoor insulators

This investigation is devoted to characterize the lon- gitudinal behaviour of grounding electrode subjected to first and subsequent lightning currents. The State Space Representation (SSR) based Transmission Line Method (TLM) has been used to obtain current and potential along the electrodes buried in resistive soils. A new time parameter consists in the ratio of the potential peak time to the current one has been proposed to identify the variation of the transient behaviour along grounding vertical and horizontal electrode. We show that soil resistivity, electrode length and impulse peak time of injected current are the most influential parameters.

Longitudinal behaviour of grounding electrodes subjected to lightning currents using SSR based TLM

The objective of our study is to analyse the ac applied voltage signals recorded for different pollution levels using a following technique: wavelet packet analysis. Laboratory tests were performed on flat plate models of glass (500×500×5 mm) under uniform pollution. The plate models were sprayed with a solution prepared by mixing 100 g of kaolin in one liter of distilled water. An appropriate amount of NaCl was added to the slurry to give required Equivalent Salt Deposit Density (ESDD). The various studied ESDD are as follows: 1.2, 3.5, 6, 10, 15 and 20 mS/cm. The obtained results show that this technique constitutes a very effective tool to estimate the pollution severity degree on outdoor insulation surface.

Flashover performance of non-uniformly polluted glass insulating surface under hvac stress

This paper presents a new DC high voltage insulators flashover model that describes the different phases of flashover process. This model uses an equivalent electrical circuit consisting of two resistances in series and an energetic balance. It comprises two algorithms: (1) the first one is a static sub-model that describes the stable mode for the beginning of flashover; and (2) the second one describes the unstable mode of the discharge by a dynamic sub-model. A new analytical equation has been established to compute the discharge linear resistance. This model allows studying the different parameters of discharge channel such as the discharge current, radius, velocity, temperature and linear resistance.

A New Model for Polluted insulators Flashover under HVDC

This work is devoted to analyze the alternating dielectric current flows through polymeric materials used in electrical cables insulation. The insulating compound based on poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC/B), used as electrical insulation in medium and low voltage cables manufactured by the electric cables factory CABEL of Algiers (Algeria), was chosen as the studied material. Accelerated thermal aging on circular shaped samples of PVC/B was performed at two temperatures, 80°C and 120°C, during 2016 hours (84 days). Spectral analysis of the obtained current waveform parameters, such as magnitude and harmonic content as indicated by the total harmonic distortion (THD), were analyzed using fast Fourier transform (FFT) method at different stages during aging time and for five levels of AC applied voltage, ranging from 3 kV to 15 kV. Through this work, the study of the current waveforms offers significant information about the degradation level of the material, which can be used for the diagnostic of electrical cables.
