Occurrence, behavior and effects of nanoparticles in the environment.

The aim of this review was to undertake a survey of researchers working with plant-parasitic nematodes in order to determine a ‘top 10’ list of these pathogens based on scientific and economic importance. Any such list will not be definitive as economic importance will vary depending on the region of the world in which a researcher is based. However, care was taken to include researchers from as many parts of the world as possible when carrying out the survey. The top 10 list emerging from the survey is composed of: (1) root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.); (2) cyst nematodes (Heterodera and Globodera spp.); (3) root lesion nematodes (Pratylenchus spp.); (4) the burrowing nematode Radopholus similis; (5) Ditylenchus dipsaci; (6) the pine wilt nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus; (7) the reniform nematode Rotylenchulus reniformis; (8) Xiphinema index (the only virus vector nematode to make the list); (9) Nacobbus aberrans; and (10) Aphelenchoides besseyi. The biology of each nematode (or nematode group) is reviewed briefly.

Top 10 plant-parasitic nematodes in molecular plant pathology

A critical review of methods for characterisation of polyphenolic compounds in fruits and vegetables.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have drawn special research attention because of their unique properties and potential applications. This review summarizes the research progress of organic chemical adsorption on CNTs, and will provide useful information for CNT application and risk assessment. Adsorption heterogeneity and hysteresis are two widely recognized features of organic chemical−CNT interactions. However, because different mechanisms may act simultaneously, mainly hydrophobic interactions, π−π bonds, electrostatic interactions, and hydrogen bonds, the prediction of organic chemical adsorption on CNTs is not straightforward. The dominant adsorption mechanism is different for different types of organic chemicals (such as polar and nonpolar), thus different models may be needed to predict organic chemical−CNT interaction. Adsorption Mechanisms of Organic Chemicals on Carbon Nanotubes

Phenolic compounds as well as flavonoids are well-known as antioxidant and many other important bioactive agents that have long been interested due to their benefits for human health, curing and preventing many diseases. This review attempts to demonstrate an overview of flavonoids and other phenolic compounds as the interesting alternative sources for pharmaceutical and medicinal applications. The examples of these phytochemicals from several medicinal plants are also illustrated, and their potential applications in pharmaceutical and medical aspects, especially for health promoting e.g., antioxidant effects, antibacterial effect, anti-cancer effect, cardioprotective effects, immune system promoting and anti-inflammatory effects, skin protective effect from UV radiation and so forth are highlighted.

Flavonoids and Other Phenolic Compounds from Medicinal Plants for Pharmaceutical and Medical Aspects: An Overview.

Porphyrins in analytical chemistry. A review.

Honey is rich in phenolic acids and flavonoids, which exhibit a wide range of biological effects and act as natural antioxidants. The analysis of polyphenols has been regarded as a very promising way of studying floral and geographical origins of honeys. This review surveys recent literature on determination of these active compounds in honey. The analytical procedure to determine individual phenolic compounds involves their extraction from the sample matrix, analytical separation and quantification. We pay particular attention to sample pre-treatment and separation techniques (e.g., high-performance liquid chromatography and electrophoresis).
