Rogues: Two Essays on Reason

The zooarchaeology of complex societies provides insights into the interrelated social and economic relationships that people and animals created. I present a synthesis of zooarchaeological research published since the early 1990s that addresses political economy, status distinctions, and the ideological and ritual roles of animals in complex cultures. I address current approaches and applications as well as theoretical shifts in zooarchaeological practice. Research indicates there is great variability across space and time in how past peoples used animals to generate economic surplus, to establish status differentiation within societies, and to create symbolic meaning through sacrifices, offerings, and in feasts. The study of human/animal interactions in complex societies can contribute to fundamental questions of broad relevance regarding political and social life.

The trouble with world culture

China is not a country but an idea, which was reformulated in the twentieth century 
to fit with the hegemonic world nation-state system. This involved a reformulation 
not only of the idea of the Chinese Empire, but also of the remains of its past – 
including artifacts that once served as the mystified insignia of power of mighty 
rulers, or as the tokens of refinement and civilization, or simply as the ostentatious 
playthings of the wealthy; and also objects previously unknown unearthed by 
modern archaeology, that is, artifacts left by people living in “China” long before 
China became China. Similar to what has happened in other “countries,” these 
objects have been recast as “national cultural heritage,” and are believed to carry 
the essence of a Chineseness reaching back “5000 years” – a claim inseparable 
from the new contemporary global politics of representation in the arena of competing nation-states (where, one might say, modern China competes especially in 
the fields of “civilizational antiquity” and “unbroken continuity”).

The Wa lands continue to be seized upon in the Chinese imagination, and elsewhere too, as representing what is dangerous and off limits. This is one important underlying reason why these lands, located in between China and Burma, have been some of the least-travelled areas on China's southwestern borders during most of the last few centuries. In fact, these areas have long been regarded as impenetrable for outsider travellers unless assisted by a full-fledged army, its gunpowder dry and its guns loaded. In the last years of the nineteenth century, the British occupation of Burma as well as increasing opium trade prompted increases in the numbers of Chinese and other visitors: officials, soldiers, traders, and so on. The first attempt at delineating a Burma-China border having failed, a second, joint British-Chinese survey was launched and almost completed in the late 1930s. These activities prompted a flurry of patriotic-scholarly efforts to claim these borderlands for the reconstituted Chinese state, which continued into the second half of the twentieth century. This brief paper explores some of the conflicting views of the various kinds of travellers and locals, including early Chinese judgements of the Wa, the nationalistic and scientistic travellers and writers of the 1930s, as well as the teams of ethnologists and soldiers dispatched there in the 1950s and 1960s – notably also Alan Winnington, the famous British correspondent for the Morning Star , and his Wa reception.
