Over the past decade, the most significant, conceptual advances in the field of fluorination were enabled most prominently by organo- and transition-metal catalysis. The most challenging transformation remains the formation of the parent C-F bond, primarily as a consequence of the high hydration energy of fluoride, strong metal-fluorine bonds, and highly polarized bonds to fluorine. Most fluorination reactions still lack generality, predictability, and cost-efficiency. Despite all current limitations, modern fluorination methods have made fluorinated molecules more readily available than ever before and have begun to have an impact on research areas that do not require large amounts of material, such as drug discovery and positron emission tomography. This Review gives a brief summary of conventional fluorination reactions, including those reactions that introduce fluorinated functional groups, and focuses on modern developments in the field.

Die wichtigsten konzeptionellen Fortschritt auf dem Gebiet der Fluorierungen der letzten zehn Jahre wurden durch die Organo- und Ubergangsmetallkatalyse ermoglicht. Die schwierigste Umwandlung ist weiterhin die Bildung der C-F-Stammbindung, was in erster Linie eine Folge der hohen Hydratationsenergie von Fluorid, starker Metall-Fluor-Bindungen und der hoch polarisierten Bindungen zu Fluor ist. Den meisten Fluorierungen fehlt es immer noch an Allgemeingultigkeit, Vorhersagbarkeit und Kosteneffizienz. Trotz der Einschrankungen sind fluorierte Verbindungen mit modernen Fluorierungsmethoden leichter zuganglich als je zuvor. Vor allem beginnen sich die modernen Methoden auf Forschungsgebiete auszuwirken, die keine grosen Materialmengen benotigen, z. B. die Wirkstoffentwicklung und die Positronenemissionstomographie. Diese Entwicklungen werden in diesem Aufsatz zusammengefasst und vor dem Hintergrund konventioneller Fluorierungsmethoden diskutiert.

Thermally stable polymers for advanced high-performance gas separation membranes

Following the rapid development of lightweight and flexible smart electronic products, providing energy for these electronics has become a hot research topic. The human body produces considerable mechanical and thermal energy during daily activities, which could be used to power most wearable electronics. In this context, fiber-based energy conversion devices (FBECD) are proposed as candidates for effective conversion of human-body energy into electricity for powering wearable electronics. Herein, functional materials, fiber fabrication techniques, and device design strategies for different classes of FBECD based on piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, electrostaticity, and thermoelectricity are comprehensively reviewed. An overview of fiber-based self-powered systems and sensors according to their superior flexibility and cost-effectiveness is also presented. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in the field of fiber-based energy conversion are discussed.

Fiber-Based Energy Conversion Devices for Human-Body Energy Harvesting

Fluorinated polymers constitute a unique class of materials that exhibit a combination of suitable properties for a wide range of applications, which mainly arise from their outstanding chemical resistance, thermal stability, low friction coefficients and electrical properties. Furthermore, those presenting stimuli-responsive properties have found widespread industrial and commercial applications, based on their ability to change in a controlled fashion one or more of their physicochemical properties, in response to single or multiple external stimuli such as light, temperature, electrical and magnetic fields, pH and/or biological signals. In particular, some fluorinated polymers have been intensively investigated and applied due to their piezoelectric, pyroelectric and ferroelectric properties in biomedical applications including controlled drug delivery systems, tissue engineering, microfluidic and artificial muscle actuators, among others. This review summarizes the main characteristics, microstructures and biomedical applications of electroactive fluorinated polymers.
