Peter Berger (1929) is an American sociologist best known for his collaboration with Thomas Luckman in writing The Social Construction of Reality: A Treatise in the Sociology of Knowledge. That book argues that human reality, and knowledge of it, is a social construct, emerging from the individual or group’s interaction with larger social structures (institutions). Social structures, once widely adopted, lose their history as social constructions (objectivation), and come over time, by the people who live within them, to be deemed natural realities independent of human construction (reification). Berger predicted, in his later book, The Sacred Canopy, near-term all-encompassing secularization of religion, which prediction has proved false, especially in the third world (as Berger himself has acknowledged in his later work, Desecularization).

Cultural careers in organizations. A dynamic analysis of the participation in voluntary cultural organizations. In this article we investigate which socialization features and individual aspects determine the membership of a cultural organization (i.e., band, choir or drama club) in the Netherlands. To test our hypotheses we employ the Family Survey Dutch Population 2000 that holds detailed information on cultural memberships. Event history analysis shows that parental social and religious participation during childhood, a person’s educational level, and a culturally active partner increase the odds of joining a cultural organization. On the other hand, young children in the respondent’s household prevent joining a band, choir or drama club. Resigning a cultural membership is positively affected by moving to another town whereas a culturally active partner further stimulates to continue a cultural subscription. Surprisingly, increasing time restrictions have no impact on the odds to resign a membership of a band, choir or drama club.
