Peter Berger (1929) is an American sociologist best known for his collaboration with Thomas Luckman in writing The Social Construction of Reality: A Treatise in the Sociology of Knowledge. That book argues that human reality, and knowledge of it, is a social construct, emerging from the individual or group’s interaction with larger social structures (institutions). Social structures, once widely adopted, lose their history as social constructions (objectivation), and come over time, by the people who live within them, to be deemed natural realities independent of human construction (reification). Berger predicted, in his later book, The Sacred Canopy, near-term all-encompassing secularization of religion, which prediction has proved false, especially in the third world (as Berger himself has acknowledged in his later work, Desecularization).

Dimensions of individual religiosity and charity

In cross-sectional survey research, it is quite common to estimate the (standardized) effect of independent variable(s) on a dependent variable. However, if repeated cross-sectional data are available, much is to be gained if the consequences of these effects on longitudinal social change are considered. To assess these consequences, we describe a type of simulation in which longitudinal shifts in the independent variable’s distribution, and longitudinal variation in effect on the dependent variable are ‘purged’ from the data. Although the method of purging is known for many years, we add new practical features by relating the method to logistic and linear regression analysis. Because both logistic and linear regression analysis can be found in all major statistical packages, the method of purging is made available to a wider group of social scientists. Influence.ME: Tools for detecting influential data in mixed models.

This chapter sets out to answer the following questions: (i) To what extent do the levels of social participation differ cross-nationally? (ii) To what extent do state institutions determine social participation, taking individual characteristics into account? (iii) To what extent is the impact of state institutions on social participation similar across social categories? It contributes to the literature on social participation in three ways. Firstly, the chapter presents theoretical accounts as to how state institutions affect social participation. Secondly, it takes a range of state institutions into account, whereas other research has been limited to analyzing only one such institution, most notably the welfare state. Thirdly, the chapter refines the broad concept of social participation. Taking advantage of recent high quality crossnational data and based on separate measures of the European Social Survey (ESS) 2002, this chapter tests the impact of state institutions on these modes of social participation separately.Keywords:European Social Survey (ESS); social participation; welfare state

Does the state affect the informal connections between its citizens? New institutionalist explanations of social participation in everyday life

Declining belief in God and increasing belief in the supernatural? Trends between 1979 and 2000 explained Religion is gradually losing its influence in Dutch society, which is one aspect of ‘secularization’. In this study we focus on individual secularization, namely the increasing number of non-religious people in the Netherlands. More specifically, traditional Christian faith and belief in the supernatural are examined. First, the trends in these forms of belief are described for the period 1979-2000. Second, explanations for the trends are formulated and tested using OLS regression analyses accompanied by a simulation technique. During the 1979-2000 period, both traditional Christian faith and belief in the supernatural declined. The decline of Christian belief and belief in the supernatural is mainly caused by compositional effects, namely the slow but continuous replacement of older religious cohorts by younger non-religious cohorts.
