Journal ArticleDOI
Zika Virus Infection and Stillbirths: A Case of Hydrops Fetalis, Hydranencephaly and Fetal Demise.
Manoel Sarno,Gielson Almeida do Sacramento,Ricardo Khouri,Mateus Santana do Rosário,Federico Costa,Federico Costa,Federico Costa,Gracinda Archanjo,Luciane Amorim Santos,Nivison Nery,Nikos Vasilakis,Albert I. Ko,Albert I. Ko,Antônio Raimundo Pinto de Almeida +13 more
TL;DR: This case report provides evidence that in addition to microcephaly, there may be a link between Zika virus infection and hydrops fetalis and fetal demise and systematic investigation of spontaneous abortions and stillbirths is warranted.
Journal ArticleDOI
High Zika Virus Seroprevalence in Salvador, Northeastern Brazil Limits the Potential for Further Outbreaks.
Eduardo Martins Netto,Andres Moreira-Soto,Celia Pedroso,Christoph Höser,Sebastian Funk,Adam J. Kucharski,Alexandra Rockstroh,Beate M. Kümmerer,Gilmara de Souza Sampaio,Estela Luz,Sara Nunes Vaz,Juarez Pereira Dias,Fernanda Anjos Bastos,Renata Cabral,Thomas Kistemann,Sebastian Ulbert,Xavier de Lamballerie,Thomas Jaenisch,Oliver J. Brady,Christian Drosten,Manoel Sarno,Carlos Brites,Jan Felix Drexler,Jan Felix Drexler +23 more
TL;DR: The data corroborate ZIKV-associated congenital disease and an association of low SES and ZikV infection and suggest that population immunity caused cessation of the outbreak.
Journal ArticleDOI
Obesity and recurrent miscarriage: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Marcelo Borges Cavalcante,Manoel Sarno,Alberto Borges Peixoto,Edward Araujo Júnior,Ricardo Barini +4 more
TL;DR: A systematic review and meta‐analysis on the relationship between excess weight and risk of recurrent pregnancy loss and the common immunological mechanisms of these two conditions revealed that obese women with a history of RPL have a high risk of future pregnancy losses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Emergence of Congenital Zika Syndrome: Viewpoint From the Front Lines.
Federico Costa,Manoel Sarno,Ricardo Khouri,Bruno de Paula Freitas,Isadora Cristina de Siqueira,Guilherme S. Ribeiro,Hugo C. Ribeiro,Gubio Soares Campos,Luiz Carlos Júnior Alcântara,Mitermayer G. Reis,Scott C. Weaver,Nikos Vasilakis,Albert I. Ko,Antônio Raimundo Pinto de Almeida +13 more
TL;DR: Insight is gained into the scope and severity of microcephaly due to presumed congenital Zika syndrome (CZS), as well as challenges in confirming this association, which supports the assertion that Zika virus causes a distinct congenital syndrome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cross-Protection of Dengue Virus Infection against Congenital Zika Syndrome, Northeastern Brazil.
Celia Pedroso,Carlo Fischer,Marie Feldmann,Manoel Sarno,Estela Luz,Andres Moreira-Soto,Renata Cabral,Eduardo Martins Netto,Carlos Brites,Beate M. Kümmerer,Jan Felix Drexler +10 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that multitypic DENV infection may protect from, rather than enhance, development of CZS, and historical DENV genomic data refuted the hypothesis that unique genome signatures for northeastern Brazil explain the uneven dispersion of CzS cases.
