The what, why, and how of spirituality in the workplace revisited: a 14-year update and extension

Meaningful work is a topic of importance in core domains of human resource development (HRD) such as employee engagement, motivation, and personal development However, there is little consensus over what comprises meaningful work or concerning the antecedent and outcome factors associated with meaningfulness Prior theorizing has tended to conflate conceptual and empirical arguments, and hence, we lack clear insight into factors related to employees’ experience of meaningfulness To address these gaps, we undertook an analysis of the empirical literature relating to meaningful work In all, 71 studies met the inclusion criteria We focused on the question, “What is the empirical evidence base concerning meaningful work, and how can this inform theory and practice in HRD?” The synthesis revealed dominant trends alongside significant gaps in understanding We highlight the practical implications of our analysis for the HRD field and propose avenues for future research on meaningfulness within HRD

A Review of the Empirical Literature on Meaningful Work: Progress and Research Agenda

Purpose




Synthesizing theories of innovative work behavior, workplace spirituality and person-organization (P-O) fit, this paper aims to build and test a theoretical model linking workplace spirituality, perceived organizational support (POS) and innovative work behavior via P-O fit. This study examined the mediating effect of P-O fit on the relationship of workplace spirituality and POS with innovative work behavior (IWB).




Design/methodology/approach




A sample of 434 employees and 59 supervisors from five leading hotels of China was used for this study.




Findings




This study found that workplace spirituality and POS both positively affected P-O fit. Workplace spirituality, P-O fit and POS positively influenced innovative work behavior. P-O fit acted as a partial mediator between workplace spirituality and IWB and between POS and IWB.




Originality/value




This study has tested the effect of workplace spirituality as an antecedent of innovative work behavior for the first time.

Workplace spirituality has received increasing attention during the past few decades, especially their effect on work outcome. The purposes of the research were to: (1) extend the findings of Petchsawang and Duchon (2012) in examining the relationships among mindfulness meditation, workplace spirituality, and work engagement in an eastern – specifically Thai – context; and (2) compare workplace spirituality and work engagement in organizations that provide mindfulness meditation courses to employees and those that do not. Workplace spirituality, mindfulness meditation, and work engagement

Spirituality in the workplace is gaining recognition and value among researchers, academicians, and business professionals. The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of spirituality in the workplace on job satisfaction by measuring four dimensions of spirituality in the workplace: meaningful work, sense of community, organizational values, and compassion. The impact of each dimension on job satisfaction is hypothesized. A cross-sectional survey was used to collect data from 100 payroll employees in private insurance companies in Punjab (India). A correlation analysis showed a positive relationship between all the dimensions of spirituality in the workplace and job satisfaction. A regression analysis revealed that although all the dimensions of spirituality in the workplace are important, organizational values and a sense of community are the most important in terms of the job satisfaction level of employees. This work will help insurance companies to better understand the concept of spirituality in the workplace and its importance. Insurance companies can improve their functioning by encouraging employee spirituality in the workplace.
