We revisit the calculation of quantum-gravitational corrections to the power spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations in the Born-Oppenheimer approach to quantum gravity. We focus on the issue of the definition of the inner product of the theory and the unitarity of the corrections to the dynamics of the cosmological perturbations. We argue that the correction terms are unitary, provided the inner product is defined in a suitable way, which can be related to a notion of gauge fixing the time variable and the use of conditional probabilities in quantum cosmology. We compare the corrections obtained within this framework to earlier results in the literature and we conclude with some remarks on the physical interpretation of the correction terms.

Unitarity of quantum-gravitational corrections to primordial fluctuations in the Born-Oppenheimer approach

Among all cosmological quantum-gravity or quantum-gravity-inspired scenarios, only very few predict a blue-tilted primordial tensor spectrum. We explore five of them and check whether they can generate a stochastic gravitational-wave background detectable by present and future interferometers: non-local quantum gravity, string-gas cosmology, new ekpyrotic scenario, Brandenberger-Ho non-commutative inflation and multi-fractional spacetimes. We show that non-local quantum gravity is unobservable, while all the other models can reach the strain sensitivity of DECIGO but not that of LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA, LISA or Einstein Telescope. Other quantum-gravity models with red-tilted spectra (most loop quantum cosmologies) or with exceptionally tiny quantum corrections (Wheeler-DeWitt quantum cosmology) are found to be non-detectable.

Stochastic gravitational-wave background in quantum gravity

In this review, we investigate the question of backreaction in different approaches to cosmological perturbation theory, and with a special focus on quantum theoretical aspects. By backreaction we refer here to the effects of matter field or cosmological inhomogeneities on the homogeneous dynamical background degrees of freedom of cosmology. We begin with an overview of classical cosmological backreaction which is ideally suited for physical situations in the late time Universe. We then proceed backwards in time, considering semiclassical approaches such as semiclassical or stochastic (semiclassical) gravity which take quantum effects of the perturbations into account. Finally, we review approaches to backreaction in quantum cosmology that should apply to the very early Universe where classical and semiclassical approximations break down. The main focus is on a recently proposed implementation of backreaction in quantum cosmology using a Born--Oppenheimer inspired method.

Backreaction in Cosmology

Time in quantum gravity is not a well-defined notion despite its central role in the very definition of dynamics. Using the formalism of quantum geometrodynamics, we briefly review the problem and illustrate it with two proposed solutions. Our main application is quantum cosmology—the application of quantum gravity to the Universe as a whole.

Time in Quantum Cosmology

We derive the first quantum gravitational corrections to the inflationary power spectra for a general single-field scalar-tensor theory which includes a non-minimal coupling to gravity, a non-standard scalar kinetic term and an arbitrary potential of the scalar field. We obtain these corrections from a semiclassical expansion of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, which, in turn, governs the full quantum dynamics in the canonical approach to quantum gravity. We discuss the magnitude and relevance of these corrections, as well as their characteristic signature in the inflationary spectral observables. We compare our results to similar calculations performed for a minimally coupled scalar field with a canonical kinetic term and discuss the impact of the non-minimal coupling on the quantum gravitational corrections.

Quantum gravitational corrections to the inflationary power spectra in scalar-tensor theories

We generalize former findings regarding quantum-gravitational corrections arising from a canonical quantization of a perturbed Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe during inflation by considering an initial state for the scalar and tensor perturbations that generalizes the adiabatic vacuum state and allows us to consider the scenario that the perturbation modes start their evolution in an excited state. Our result shows that the quantum-gravitationally corrected power spectra get modified by prefactors including the excitation numbers.
