Journal ArticleDOI
Conservation of ornamental stone by Myxococcus xanthus-induced carbonate biomineralization.
Carlos Rodriguez-Navarro,Manuel Rodriguez-Gallego,Koutar Ben Chekroun,Maria Teresa Gonzalez-Muñoz +3 more
TL;DR: It is reported that Myxococcus xanthus-induced calcium carbonate precipitation efficiently protects and consolidates porous ornamental limestone and forms new carbonate crystals that are more stress resistant than the calcite grains of the original stone.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bacterially mediated mineralization of vaterite
Carlos Rodriguez-Navarro,Concepcion Jimenez-Lopez,Alejandro B. Rodríguez-Navarro,Maria Teresa Gonzalez-Muñoz,Manuel Rodriguez-Gallego +4 more
TL;DR: In this paper, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) observations point to polymorph selection by physicochemical (kinetic) factors (high supersaturation) and stabilization by organics, both connected with bacterial activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Precipitation and Growth Morphology of Calcium Carbonate Induced by Myxococcus Xanthus: Implications for Recognition of Bacterial Carbonates
Kaoutar Ben Chekroun,Carlos Rodriguez-Navarro,Maria Teresa Gonzalez-Muñoz,José María Arias,Guiseppe Cultrone,Manuel Rodriguez-Gallego +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that calcite and vaterite formed in a gel medium in the presence of Myxococcus xanthus display a range of morphologies that depend on whether the bacteria are live or dead.
Journal ArticleDOI
Consolidation of degraded ornamental porous limestone stone by calcium carbonate precipitation induced by the microbiota inhabiting the stone.
Concepcion Jimenez-Lopez,Carlos Rodriguez-Navarro,Guadalupe Piñar,F.J. Carrillo-Rosúa,Manuel Rodriguez-Gallego,Maria Teresa Gonzalez-Muñoz +5 more
TL;DR: A good candidate to in situ consolidate decayed porous limestone is the application of a sterile culture medium with the characteristics specified in the present study.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bacterial biomineralization: new insights from Myxococcus-induced mineral precipitation
Maria Teresa Gonzalez-Muñoz,Carlos Rodriguez-Navarro,Francisca Martínez-Ruiz,José María Arias,Mohamed L. Merroun,Manuel Rodriguez-Gallego +5 more
TL;DR: This review strives to show that the mechanisms which control bacterial biomineralization are not mineral- or bacterial-specific, on the contrary, they appear to be universal and depend on the environment in which bacteria dwell.
