Journal Article
Iron metabolism in thalassemia intermedia.
TL;DR: Iron overload was observed between patients who underwent splenectomy and non-splenectomized patients, and the levels of transferrin saturation, serum ferritin and desferrioxamine-induced urinary iron excretion were significantly higher in splenECTomized than in non- splenected patients, indicating that the spleen could have a role in the regulation of iron metabolism in these patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Anemia in elderly hospitalized patients: prevalence and clinical impact
Margherita Migone De Amicis,Erika Poggiali,Irene Motta,Francesca Minonzio,Giovanna Fabio,Cinzia Hu,Maria Domenica Cappellini +6 more
TL;DR: A high prevalence of anemia in elderly patients, and its association with a higher number of comorbidities and a longer stay is confirmed, confirming its negative impact on patients' quality of life and its social burden in term of healthcare needs and costs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Non-transferrin-bound iron in alcohol abusers.
Tullia Maria De Feo,Silvia Fargion,Lorena Duca,Bruno Mario Cesana,Lodovico Boncinelli,Paola Lozza,Maria Domenica Cappellini,Gemino Fiorelli +7 more
TL;DR: Non-transferrin-bound iron could have a role in initiating or promoting alcohol-induced liver damage and may be associated independently with alcohol intake and total bilirubin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Defining serum ferritin thresholds to predict clinically relevant liver iron concentrations for guiding deferasirox therapy when MRI is unavailable in patients with non-transfusion-dependent thalassaemia
Ali T. Taher,John B. Porter,Vip Viprakasit,Antonis Kattamis,Suporn Chuncharunee,Pranee Sutcharitchan,Noppadol Siritanaratkul,Raffaella Origa,Zeynep Karakas,Dany Habr,Zewen Zhu,Maria Domenica Cappellini +11 more
TL;DR: Using data from screened patients and those treated with deferasirox for up to 2 years, clinically relevant serum ferritin thresholds for the initiation of chelation therapy are identified, as well as thresholds to guide chelator dose interruption and dose escalation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic hemochromatosis in Italian patients with porphyria cutanea tarda: possible explanation for iron overload.
Silvia Fargion,Anna Ludovica Fracanzani,Riccardo Romano,Maria Domenica Cappellini,Maristella Faré,Michela Mattioli,Alberto Piperno,Guido Ronchi,Gemino Fiorelli +8 more
TL;DR: Italian patients with porphyria cutanea tarda and iron overload appear to have one or even two genes for genetic hemochromatosis.
