Journal Article

Iron metabolism in thalassemia intermedia.

TL;DR: Iron overload was observed between patients who underwent splenectomy and non-splenectomized patients, and the levels of transferrin saturation, serum ferritin and desferrioxamine-induced urinary iron excretion were significantly higher in splenECTomized than in non- splenected patients, indicating that the spleen could have a role in the regulation of iron metabolism in these patients.
Journal ArticleDOI

Anemia in elderly hospitalized patients: prevalence and clinical impact

TL;DR: A high prevalence of anemia in elderly patients, and its association with a higher number of comorbidities and a longer stay is confirmed, confirming its negative impact on patients' quality of life and its social burden in term of healthcare needs and costs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Non-transferrin-bound iron in alcohol abusers.

Journal ArticleDOI

Genetic hemochromatosis in Italian patients with porphyria cutanea tarda: possible explanation for iron overload.

TL;DR: Italian patients with porphyria cutanea tarda and iron overload appear to have one or even two genes for genetic hemochromatosis.
