Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods have evolved to accommodate various types of applications. Dozens of methods have been developed, with even small variations to existing methods causing the creation of new branches of research. This paper performs a literature review of common Multi-Criteria Decision Making methods, examines the advantages and disadvantages of the identified methods, and explains how their common applications relate to their relative strengths and weaknesses. The analysis of MCDM methods performed in this paper provides a clear guide for how MCDM methods should be used in particular situations.

CBR methodology application in an expert system for aided design ship's engine room automation

A process planning system using case-based reasoning (CBR) is developed for block assembly in shipbuilding. A block assembly planning problem is modeled as a constraint satisfaction problem where the precedence relations between operations are considered constraints. In order to find similar cases, we propose two similarity coefficients for finding similar cases and for finding similar relations. Due to the limited number of operation types, the process planning system first matches the parts of the problem and those of the case-based on their roles in the assembly, and then it matches the relations related to the matched part–pairs. The parts involved in more operations are considered first. The process planning system is applied to simple examples for verification and comparison. An interface system is also developed for extracting information from CAD model, for preparing data for process planning, and for visually verifying the assembly sequence.

Knowledge Based Engineering: Notion, Approaches and Future Trends

The paper presents a structure and functions of an expert system for aided design of ship systems automation. The system was developed on basis of a detailed analysis of the design process of ship systems automation. The system includes: knowledge bases regarding methods and procedures of ship systems automation design, databases of automated objects, control devices and elements, requirements of classification societies, and a subsystem for simulation investigations co-operating with the Matlab Simulink package and a knowledge base. In the creation of the system the shell expert system Exsys Developer was used. This system is characterised by a rule-oriented representation of knowledge, backward and forward chaining inference methods, various confidence modes to handle uncertain reasoning including fuzzy logic, and possibility of co-operation with other software and databases. The databases were made using the MS Access software.
