This study evaluated the suitability of old corrugated containerboard (OCC) to be upcycled into a high-quality pulp for tissue paper manufacture. The evolution of the physicochemical properties of OCC fibers and their effect on tissue properties were tracked across each stage of two elemental chlorine free (ECF) bleaching sequences. The properties of bleached OCC were compared to those of deinked pulp (DIP), southern bleached softwood kraft (SBSK), and refined OCC unbleached. Both sequences reduced the kappa number from 89 to negligible values and increased brightness from 18.9% to ca. 75% ISO, on average 6.2% ISO units below that of DIP. Overall, bleaching significantly increased tensile index and absorbency rate while having adverse effects on bulk and softness and minor impacts on absorption capacity. The change in properties was correlated to the improved fiber bondability and fiber wettability derived from the lignin removal. Compared to DIP, bleached OCC exhibited a higher tensile index, higher freeness, and similar absorption capacity but lower softness. It also showed higher absorption capacity and similar softness than SBSK but lower freeness at a comparable tensile index. The results indicate that upgraded OCC could be used as an alternative fiber to address the forecasted shortage of high-grade recycled papers in recycled tissue grades or replace virgin fibers in producing virgin tissue grades. In addition, it was determined that refined OCC unbleached could also be suitable for use in tissue grades where high brightness is not an essential product feature.

Upcycling strategies for old corrugated containerboard to attain high-performance tissue paper: A viable answer to the packaging waste generation dilemma

Current studies on how a sustainability leadership theory can influence the practice of SMEs, such as a context of community-based social enterprises, is still lacking, with scanty research to date. These small enterprises in the bottom of the pyramid settings are indeed the important socio-economic backbone of many nations around the world. The COVID-19 pandemic crisis has significantly hit all sectors and has adversely impacted them. Our study aims to broaden the limited scholarly knowledge and advance the developing SL theory in this realm. Hence, our critical research inquiries address: (1) What are the essential sustainable leadership practices and sustainability competencies for sustainability and resilience in a CBSE context? (2) How can a CBSE business apply the theoretical frameworks in practice to survive and thrive for sustainable futures, especially during the COVID-19 era? This study employs an integrative theoretical examination of sustainable leadership frameworks and sustainability leadership competencies to investigate the sustainable business practices in the SME sector, particularly in a community-based social enterprise context. Our business case centers on a green, social enterprise, which is an award-winner of Best Responsible Tourism and is located in a small coastal fishing village of Thailand. Using a case study research method, the multi-data collection methods include in-depth interviews and focus groups with multiple stakeholders. Evidence was found to comply with six-category sustainable leadership practices and five essential sustainability leadership competencies to varying degrees. The findings suggest that sustainable leaders and entrepreneurs should develop and integrate the value-based practices and competencies (i.e., strategic, systems thinking, interpersonal, anticipatory, ethical competencies) in business. The critical sustainable practices include enabling human capital with care for stakeholders, fostering ethical values and norms via altruism, cultivating social capital through social innovation, and supporting pro-environmental behavior and social responsibility to achieve inclusive growth, sustainability and resilience. The research results advance the theoretical development of the interconnected fields of sustainability leadership and sustainable entrepreneurship. An alternative sustainable business model for sustainability and resilience is also proposed. Overall, the insightful findings can provide practical advice and beneficial policy implications for sustainable futures.

Sustainable Leadership Practices and Competencies of SMEs for Sustainability and Resilience: A Community-Based Social Enterprise Study

Does agri-environmental management enhance biodiversity and multiple ecosystem services?: A farm-scale experiment

Social innovation (SI) impacts are long-term changes that affect different dimensions of territorial capital (i.e., economy, society, environment, governance) for the territory in which SI occurs. Yet, systematic empirical evidence and theoretically sound assessments of the impacts of SI are scarce. This paper aims to fill the gap and assess the different aspects of SI’s impacts in European and Mediterranean areas that are characterized by marginalization processes. To assess the impacts of SI in marginalized areas, we use the evaluation framework developed within the Social Innovation in Marginalized Rural Areas (SIMRA) Horizon 2020 project and apply it to nine SI initiatives related to the fields of agriculture, fisheries, forestry, and rural development. Our findings show that SI produces cross-sectoral (societal, economic, environmental, and governmental) and multi-level impacts (on individuals, community, and society), which have improved the societal well-being, and contributed to the reduction of certain forms of marginality, mainly inside the territory in which SI occurred.
