According to the recent Spanish legislation, the amount of non-hazardous construction and demolition waste (C&D waste) by weight must be reduced by at least 70% by 2020. However, the current behavior of the stakeholders involved in the waste management process make this goal difficult to achieve. In order to boost changes in their strategies, we firstly describe an Environmental Management System (EMS) based on regulation measures and economic incentives which incorporate universities as a key new actor in order to create a 3Rs model (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) in the C&D waste management with costs savings. The target areas are focused mainly on producer responsibility, promotion of low-waste building technologies and creation of green jobs to fulfill three main objectives: valorization of inert wastes, elimination of illegal landfills and stimulation of demand for recycled C&D wastes. To achieve this latter goal, we have also designed a simulation model—using the Systems Dynamic methodology—to assess the potential impact of two policies (incentives and tax penalties) in order to evaluate how the government can influence the behavior of the firms in the recycling system of C&D waste aggregates. This paper finds a broader understanding of the socioeconomic implications of waste management over time and the positive effects of these policies in the recycled aggregates market in order to achieve the goal of 30% C&D waste aggregates in 12 years or less.

Understanding the performance gap in energy retrofitting: measured input data for adjusting building simulation models

A severe earthquake hit Zagreb on the March 22, 2020 (magnitude ML = 5.5, with an epicenter 7 km north of the city center). During the COVID-19 lockdown, the event occurred and caused significant damage to the built environment and enormous disruption in everyday life. Brief facts about the Zagreb earthquake, the typology of buildings in the city, and the data collection after the quake itself are described. The paper focuses on post-earthquake assessment, damage classification, and failure patterns of residential buildings in Zagreb's old historical town, where masonry structures prevail. The earthquake critically damaged buildings that are important architectural achievements and ruptured Zagreb's historically recognizable city center. Furthermore, the data collected in the rapid post-earthquake assessment were analyzed and discussed. Graphical representations of damages are detailed and accompanied by photographs. This earthquake exposed Croatian building stock's vulnerability that should be mitigated as efficiently as possible in the coming years.

Hygrothermal Performance Of Ventilated Prefabricated Sandwich Wall Panel From Recycled Construction And Demolition Waste – A Case Study

A full-scale test has been performed to determine fire performance of different ETICS systems (combustible insulation, combustible insulation with fire barrier, noncombustible insulation). Test specimens were constructed and tested according to BS 8414-1:2002, while additional measurements were also conducted to obtain valuable information for better understanding of fire performance of systems used. U ovom radu prikazano je ispitivanje fasadnih sustava u stvarnoj velicini. Ispitivanje je provedeno s ciljem usporedbe ponasanja ETICS sustava s razlicitim toplinsko izolacijskim slojem (goriva izolacija, goriva izolacija s protupožarnom barijerom od negorivog materijala, negoriva izolacija) u uvjetima požara. Uzorci su izrađeni i ispitani u skladu s normom BS 8414-1:2002, a provedena su i dodatna mjerenja kako bi se dobili bitni podaci koji omogucuju bolje razumijevanje ponasanja ETICS sustava u požaru.

Comparative full-scale fire performance testing of ETICS systems

The construction sector, identified as one of the largest producers of construction and demolition waste (CDW) and one of the largest energy consumers, demands effective measures and applicable solutions to address sustainability challenges. The closed-loop recycling of CDW, integrated with the large-scale deployment of high energy performing buildings, represents a challenge for the whole construction sector, where the lack of waste efficient and energy efficient envelope systems is identified as one of the main barriers. The aim of this paper is to provide one possible solution to tackle the aforementioned issues – a highly insulated prefabricated ventilated facade panel with concrete layers produced using recycled CDW. The results of extensive research confirm that it is possible to replace a high percentage (50%) of natural coarse aggregate with recycled CDW and produce concrete with good mechanical, durability, and hygrothermal properties. Upscaling from initial research and optimisation at material level to an element level, i.e. development and testing of a ventilated facade panel, demonstrated that it is possible to produce a modular envelope system from recycled CDW that meets all performance requirements for certain construction product type (Declaration of performance and CE-marking). Moreover, the results of hygrothermal and energy consumption field monitoring at the whole building level suggest that the developed panel is suitable for use as a high-performing building envelope in real environmental conditions.
