Journal ArticleDOI

Genetic characterization and phylogenetic position of Echinococcus felidis (Cestoda: Taeniidae) from the African lion.

TL;DR: Taeniid eggs from lion feces in Uganda and amplified DNA from individual eggs indicated the presence of a distinct species of E. granulosus felidis, which had been identified morphologically approximately 40 years ago in South Africa.
Journal ArticleDOI

A survey of Echinococcus species in wild carnivores and livestock in East Africa

TL;DR: Evidence is provided that Echinococcus felidis is a frequent parasite of lions in Uganda, and possibly also occurs in hyenas, and it is shown that warthogs interact as intermediate hosts for E. felidis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cystic echinococcosis in Turkey: genetic variability and first record of the pig strain (G7) in the country.

TL;DR: A sample of 22 Echinococcus granulosus isolates collected from 12 sheep and ten humans from a focus of cystic echinococcosis in western Turkey was examined by DNA sequencing of four mitochondrial genes, demonstrating the presence of two species of E. granulo sensu stricto and E. canadensis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Echinococcus multilocularis is a frequent parasite of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in Latvia

TL;DR: Considering the increasing number of humans infected with echinococcosis in Latvia since 2002, the situation is highly suggestive of a recent emergence of E. multilocularis.
