Journal ArticleDOI

Oral contraceptive use is associated with a systemic acute phase response

TL;DR: The results indicate that use of oral contraception is associated with a modest, but statistically highly significant, acute phase response, and may be one mechanism by which oral contraceptives increase thromboembolic risk.
Journal ArticleDOI

Clinical, radiological and serum amyloid P component scintigraphic features of beta2-microglobulin amyloidosis associated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.

TL;DR: The prevalence of beta2M amyloidosis in this study was comparable with that in reported haemodialysis populations, but larger and longer term studies are required to determine whether CAPD favourably influences their clinical expression.
Journal ArticleDOI

Acute phase protein response to infection in elderly patients

TL;DR: In a prospective series of 114 acute elderly admissions to a Geriatric Unit there was a significant change with infection in all proteins studied, but C-reactive protein was the most sensitive marker of the presence and severity of infection and the response to antimicrobial therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Primary Localised Amyloidosis of the Orbit

TL;DR: There is a characteristic clinical and radiological pattern for primary localised amyloidosis of the orbit and the disease process is truly local and not part of a systemic process.
