With the severe spectrum shortage in conventional cellular bands, millimeter wave (mmW) frequencies between 30 and 300 GHz have been attracting growing attention as a possible candidate for next-generation micro- and picocellular wireless networks. The mmW bands offer orders of magnitude greater spectrum than current cellular allocations and enable very high-dimensional antenna arrays for further gains via beamforming and spatial multiplexing. This paper uses recent real-world measurements at 28 and 73 GHz in New York, NY, USA, to derive detailed spatial statistical models of the channels and uses these models to provide a realistic assessment of mmW micro- and picocellular networks in a dense urban deployment. Statistical models are derived for key channel parameters, including the path loss, number of spatial clusters, angular dispersion, and outage. It is found that, even in highly non-line-of-sight environments, strong signals can be detected 100-200 m from potential cell sites, potentially with multiple clusters to support spatial multiplexing. Moreover, a system simulation based on the models predicts that mmW systems can offer an order of magnitude increase in capacity over current state-of-the-art 4G cellular networks with no increase in cell density from current urban deployments.

Millimeter Wave Channel Modeling and Cellular Capacity Evaluation

A multiple-access MIMO WLAN system that employs MIMO, OFDM, and TDD. The system (1) uses a channel structure with a number of configurable transport channels, (2) supports multiple rates and transmission modes, which are configurable based on channel conditions and user terminal capabilities, (3) employs a pilot structure with several types of pilot (e.g., beacon, MIMO, steered reference, and carrier pilots) for different functions, (4) implements rate, timing, and power control loops for proper system operation, and (5) employs random access for system access by the user terminals, fast acknowledgment, and quick resource assignments. Calibration may be performed to account for differences in the frequency responses of transmit/receive chains at the access point and user terminals. The spatial processing may then be simplified by taking advantage of the reciprocal nature of the downlink and uplink and the calibration.

MIMO WLAN system

Long-term evolution (LTE) represents an emerging and promising technology for providing broadband ubiquitous Internet access. For this reason, several research groups are trying to optimize its performance. Unfortunately, at present, to the best of our knowledge, no open-source simulation platforms, which the scientific community can use to evaluate the performance of the entire LTE system, are freely available. The lack of a common reference simulator does not help the work of researchers and poses limitations on the comparison of results claimed by different research groups. To bridge this gap, herein, the open-source framework LTE-Sim is presented to provide a complete performance verification of LTE networks. LTE-Sim has been conceived to simulate uplink and downlink scheduling strategies in multicell/multiuser environments, taking into account user mobility, radio resource optimization, frequency reuse techniques, the adaptive modulation and coding module, and other aspects that are very relevant to the industrial and scientific communities. The effectiveness of the proposed simulator has been tested and verified considering 1) the software scalability test, which analyzes both memory and simulation time requirements; and 2) the performance evaluation of a realistic LTE network providing a comparison among well-known scheduling strategies.

Simulating LTE Cellular Systems: An Open-Source Framework

Device-to-device (D2D) communication as an underlaying cellular network empowers user-driven rich multimedia applications and also has proven to be network efficient offloading eNodeB traffic. However, D2D transmitters may cause significant amount of interference to the primary cellular network when radio resources are shared between them. During the downlink (DL) phase, primary cell UE (user equipment) may suffer from interference by the D2D transmitter. On the other hand, the immobile eNodeB is the victim of interference by the D2D transmitter during the uplink (UL) phase when radio resources are allocated randomly. Such interference can be avoided otherwise diminish if radio resource allocated intelligently with the coordination from the eNodeB. In this paper, we formulate the problem of radio resource allocation to the D2D communications as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP). Such an optimization problem is notoriously hard to solve within fast scheduling period of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. We therefore propose an alternative greedy heuristic algorithm that can lessen interference to the primary cellular network utilizing channel gain information. We also perform extensive simulation to prove the efficacy of the proposed algorithm.

Efficient resource allocation for device-to-device communication underlaying LTE network

Research and development of signal processing algorithms for UMTS Long Term Evolution (LTE) requires a realistic, flexible, and standard-compliant simulation environment. To facilitate comparisons with work of other research groups such a simulation environment should ideally be publicly available. In this paper, we present a MATLAB-based downlink physical-layer simulator for LTE. We identify different research applications that are covered by our simulator. Depending on the research focus, the simulator offers to carry out single-downlink, single-cell multi-user, and multi-cell multi-user simulations. By utilizing the Parallel Computing Toolbox of MATLAB, the simulator can efficiently be executed on multi-core processors to significantly reduce the simulation time.

Simulating the Long Term Evolution physical layer

In this paper we propose a modification to Shannon capacity bound in order to facilitate accurate benchmarking of UTRAN long term evolution (LTE). The method is generally applicable to wireless communication systems, while we have used LTE air-interface technology as a case study. We introduce an adjusted Shannon capacity formula, where we take into account the system bandwidth efficiency and the SNR efficiency of LTE. Separating these issues, allows for simplified parameter extraction. We show that the bandwidth efficiency can be calculated based on system parameters, while the SNR efficiency is extracted from detailed link level studies including advanced features of MIMO and frequency domain packet scheduling (FDPS). We then use the adjusted Shannon capacity formula combined with G-factor distributions for macro and micro cell scenarios to predict LTE cell spectral efficiency (SE). Such LTE SE predictions are compared to LTE cell SE results generated by system level simulations. The results show an excellent match of less that 5-10% deviation.

LTE Capacity Compared to the Shannon Bound

The present invention presents a method and apparatus for phase hopping and space-time coding signals for transmission on multiple antennas. The method and apparatus provides expansion of a N×N′ space time block code to a M×M′ space time block code, where M>N, by using phase hopping on the symbols within the N×N′ space time block code to allow transmission of the space time block code on a number of diversity antennas greater than N′. A result of M antenna diversity may be achieved for M transmit antennas.

Non-zero complex weighted space-time code for multiple antenna transmission

For scenarios with a large number of users to be served in one cell, high capacity gains can be achieved by transmitting independent data streams to different users sharing the same time-frequency resources. This technique is known as Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO). In this paper we investigate the performance of MU-MIMO operation in 3GPP LTE for different frequency granularities of the precoder at the OFDM transmitter. We also investigate the impact of channel correlation on the performance of the receiver when it is unaware of the interfererpsilas precoding vector. The performance is evaluated by means of semistatic system simulations.

Performance of linear multi-user MIMO precoding in LTE system

Equipment for transmitting a signal, the equipment comprising an antenna array (600 - 606) for providing three or more radiation antenna patterns. The equipment is arranged to transmit a primary common pilot signal with at most two radiation patterns and a secondary common pilot signal with at least one radiation pattern. The equipment comprises controllers (622a - 622d) for adjusting the power ratio between the primary and the secondary common pilot signal and the total power of the primary and the secondary common pilot signals, and controllers (614a - 614d) for adjusting the transmit power of the dedicated pilot signal, such that the power levels of the dedicated pilot signals transmitted with the same radiation patterns as the secondary common pilot signal are relatively higher than the power levels of the dedicated pilot signals transmitted with the same radiation patterns as the primary common pilots.

Data transmission method and equipment

This paper presents air interface capacity simulations for VoIP (Voice-over-IP) over 3GPP Release 7 High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) networks. The results show that 3GPP HSPA is able to provide VoIP spectral efficiency which is higher than the spectral efficiency for circuit switched voice calls with the same end-to-end quality. The high VoIP efficiency can be attributed to the packet optimization features in 3GPP Release 5, 6 and 7 specifications, to the advanced mobile receiver algorithms and to the VoIP optimized radio network algorithms. The studies also show that HSPA mobility solutions fulfil VoIP requirements with synchronous handover even if HSDPA does not use soft handover.
