Linguistic Diversity Index: A Scientometric Measure to Enhance the Relevance of Small and Minority Group Languages:

English is seen as the “lingua franca” of science because it offers the possibility for researchers from all countries to communicate and exchange information through the same language. There is a growing tendency to publish articles in the English language, reflecting the efforts of scientists, educational institutions and journals to promote the internationalization of their scientific production. The objective of this study was to evaluate if articles in English, published in journals in the SciELO Brazil collection, and belonging to the areas of Applied Social Sciences, tend to receive more citations within the SciELO Citation Index, integrated with the Web of Science, from Clarivate Analytics. For that, metadata and number of citations was collected from articles published in 19 selected journals. As a result, it has been found that there is indeed a trend towards scientific internationalization, given the increase in the number of articles published in English over the years. However, in 14 journals, articles published only in Portuguese or Spanish were the ones that presented the highest citation average, when compared to the other languages. In conclusion, it is pointed out that in the area of Applied Social Sciences, articles published in English tend to be less cited within the SciELO Network. Therefore, although the purpose is to give greater international visibility of Brazilian publications, in some cases, the language may not be able to change the impact of these documents.

Uso do inglês como estratégia de internacionalização da produção científica em Ciências Sociais Aplicadas: estudo de caso na SciELO Brasil

Core-periphery nexus in the EU social sciences: bibliometric perspective

The objective of this paper was to determine what type of information is available for journal article production from different sources, especially for Brazilian researchers in the areas of humanities (H) and social sciences (SS), and Letters, Literature and Arts (LLA). This paper looks at the various dimensions of the SS, H, and LLA impact using data from four databases (InCites based on Web of Science/Carivate Analytics, SciVal based on Scopus/Elsevier, Scielo and Redalyc). The four databases show low overlap. A large proportion of Brazilian papers in Incites and Scival are published in a low percentage of journals in these databases, with a high percentage of journals having a few papers each. SS, H and LLA have fewer papers per journal, fewer authors per paper and LLA cite fewer papers than the other areas of knowledge. They also take longer to accumulate citations, and the behaviour of citations in Scielo differs from those in Incites and SciVal. The largest number of downloads of Brazilian papers from Redalyc is from the USA. Different databases show different citation patterns and impacts. The quantity and quality of production of Brazilian science in SSH areas are improving and can show high-impact research and prominence worldwide. Nevertheless, relevant themes for Brazil may not have the same importance internationally. Therefore, evaluation in these areas should not be limited to international databases. Recognising these differences does not imply negative conclusions regarding the international insertion of Brazilian human and social sciences.

Bibliometric measures in social sciences and humanities from different sources based on Brazilian data

Narodni casopisy jsou důležitým prostředkem pro pěstovani dialogu o směřovani jednotlivých oborů. Clenove redakcnich rad těchto casopisů mohou ovlivnit kodifikaci měřitek praci publikovaných v danem oboru, bývaji proto oznacovani jako gatekeepers, tedy „stražci brany vybirajici, který obsah a forma vědeckeho sděleni jsou přijatelne“. Abychom si vytvořili alespoň přibližnou představu o složeni redakcnich rad, můžeme využit scientometricke udaje. Ackoli jsou obdobne analýzy u zahranicnich periodik běžne, v nasem narodnim prostředi jsme takovou studii nedohledali. U modeloveho souboru ceských a slovenských casopisů z oblasti pedagogiky a didaktiky biologie jsme proto v databazi WOS vyhledali H-index clenů redakcnich rad a porovnali domaci a zahranicni cleny z pohledu tohoto kriteria. H-index se nam podařilo dohledat u větsiny domacich a zahranicnich clenů, neuplnost dat byla způsobena nejednoznacnosti interpretace a přiřazeni dat dostupných v databazi WOS.
Mezi některými casopisy jsme prokazali statisticky významne rozdily v H-skore (průměrný H-index clenů redakcnich rad), pro tuto analýzu jsme použili Kruskalův–Wallisův testu. Pomoci Mannova–Whitneyho U-testu jsme ukazali, že faktor indexace casopisu v databazi Scopus nema signifikantni vliv na H-skore casopisu. Přispěvek zahranicnich clenů redakcnich rad k H-skore casopisu byl, v porovnani s přispěvkem domacich clenů, signifikantně vyssi pouze u tři casopisů, u ostatnich byl přispěvek domacich a zahranicnich clenů vyrovnaný (zde jsme použili Pearsonův chi-kvadrat test).

Národní odborné časopisy a analýza H-indexu členů jejich redakčních rad

From the perspective of non-Anglophone countries, accountability, liability, and capacity of scientific research is often related to the process of internationalization. The article explores the effects of this process on the example of publication and citation patterns of Serbian scholars. Results of the analysis are mostly in line with the common conceptions about the differences among scientific disciplines. Authors in social sciences and humanities have manifested more nationally oriented publication and citation behavior, tendency to cite older literature, and stronger preference towards non-journal literature. However, huge individual differences among scholars and some inconsistencies between their publication and citation patterns, reveal a form of latent conflict between the accustomed publishing behavior in social sciences and humanities and the new dynamics of knowledge production. This conflict obscures the notion of typical or expected behavior of scholars in certain disciplines and has important implications for research evaluation. Scholars in social sciences and humanities were not so eager and successful in shifting their communication to the international arena. For them, national journals still play a crucial role in the “local” information exchange. But the question is how one transitional country that is facing serious structural challenges and weak economy can afford to support “locally relevant” research projects and whether national journals have become a mere tool for an ungainly customized research evaluation in the social sciences and humanities.
