Brief paper: Finite-horizon dynamic optimization of nonlinear systems in real time

This paper focuses on coupling two different computational approaches, namely finite element method (FEM) and meshless finite difference method (MFDM), in one domain. The coupled approach is applied in solving thermomechanical initialboundary value problem where the heat transport in the domain is non-stationary. In this method, the domain is divided into two subdomains for FEM and MFDM, respectively. Contrary to other coupling techniques, the approach presented in this paper is defined in terms of mathematical problem formulation rather than at the approximation level. In the weak form of thermomechanical initialboundary value problem (variational principle), the appropriate additional coupling integrals are defined a-priori. Subsequently, the FEM and the MFDM approximations, which may differ from each other, are provided to the formulation. It is assumed that there exists a very thin layer of material between the subdomains, which is not spatially discretized. The width of this layer may be considered the coupling parameter and it is the same for both, thermal and mechanical parts. Similar approach is applied to essential boundary conditions (e.g. prescribed temperature and displacements). Consequently, the consistent formulation of the mixed problem for the coupled FEMMFDM method is derived. The analysis is illustrated with two- and three-dimensional examples of mechanical and thermomechanical problems.

Strategies involving the local defect correction multi-level refinement method for solving three-dimensional linear elastic problems

Afin d'anticiper les effets du vieillissement des enceintes de confinement des centrales electronucleaires, l'IRSN effectue des recherches avancees sur le vieillissement du beton. Les problematiques de fissuration liees au vieillissement sont abordees a l'aide d'une methode micromecanique basee sur des Modeles de Zones Cohesives Frottantes et a l'aide de la methode d' > basee sur des considerations energetiques. L'objectif de la these est de reduire les temps de calcul lies a ces deux approches, tout en conservant une bonne precision dans les zones d'interet, en adaptant la discretisation en espace a l'aide de techniques de raffinement local adaptatif. La methode de raffinement retenue est la methode CHARMS (Conforming Hierarchical Adaptive Refinement Methods). Cette methode, basee sur le raffinement des fonctions de base, permet un raffinement sans degradation de la qualite des mailles initiales. En particulier, les non conformites geometriques sont naturellement prises en compte. Initialement appliquee a la Mecanique des Fluides, cette methode est d'abord etendue a la Mecanique des Milieux De-formables en proposant un critere de raffinement general, puis elle est appliquee a la methode d' > et aux Modeles de Zones Cohesives. Enfin, l'influence de la morphologie des inclusions d'un Volume Elementaire Representatif de beton numerique sur le comportement apparent et sur la fissuration est etudiee.

El uso de una malla compuesta de elementos finitos puede resultar de utilidad para estimar
errores de discretizacion e incluso obtener una solucion mejorada sin elevar el costo computacional. Esta
tecnica surge de una analogia con la teoria de mezclas para la modelacion de materiales compuestos por
varias fases. Lo que el metodo propone consiste en resolver, sobre una malla dada, un sistema lineal
cuyo operador resulta de una combinacion lineal de operadores definidos en mallas con distintos grados
de refinamiento y definidos sobre la malla mas fina de manera adecuada. Las distintas mallas poseen
nodos en comun, los cuales vinculan sus respectivos operadores.
Los metodos Multigrilla resuelven un sistema lineal empleando sistemas de distintos tamnos resultantes
de varios niveles de discretizacion. Esta caracteristica motiva el estudio de la aplicacion de una
tecnica multigrilla en conjunto con la de mallas compuestas, cuya potencialidad es explorada en el presente
trabajo. Se presentan diferentes ejemplos de aplicacion de la estrategia desarrollada a problemas
elipticos en dos dimensiones, algunos de ellos con solucion analitica.

The Composite Finite Element Mesh method is useful for discretization error estimation and, in addition, for solution improvement with no appreciable increment in the computational cost. The technique consists in redeﬁne over a given mesh the linear operator that arises from the discretization of a partial diﬀerential equation. This operator is modiﬁed according to an appropriate linear combination between the operators of the given mesh and of a coarse mesh, which must be a coarsening of the ﬁrst one. On the other hand, Multigrid methods solve a linear system using systems of several sizes resulting from diﬀerent discretization levels. This feature motivates the study of the application of the Multigrid strategy in conjunction with the Composite Mesh technique. In this work, we propose a scheme for solving the linear system arising from the Composite Mesh strategy using a Multigrid method. Particularly, we use a geometric version of the Multigrid technique. The proposal is based on a modiﬁcation of the operators in some levels of the Multigrid algorithm in order to achieve both, the advantages of Multigrid for linear systems resolution and the solution improvement that could be achieved with the Composite Mesh strategy. Several elliptic test problems with analytical solution are presented, where the convergence rates are analyzed and the decrease in discretization errors is quantiﬁed.

El uso de una malla compuesta algebraica de elementos finitos puede resultar de utilidad para estimar errores de discretizacion e incluso obtener una solucion mejorada sin elevar el costo computacional.
Esta tecnica surge de una analogia con la teoria de mallas compuestas geometricas.
Lo que el metodo propone consiste en resolver, sobre una malla dada, un sistema lineal cuyo operador resulta de una combinacion lineal de operadores definidos en mallas con distintos grados de refinamiento y definidos sobre la malla mas fina de manera adecuada. Las distintas mallas poseen nodos en comun, los cuales vinculan sus respectivos operadores.
En este trabajo se desarrolla el metodo de malla compuesta algebraica para mejorar la solucion numerica obtenida por el metodo de elementos finitos. Se presentan ejemplos sobre problemas elipticos en dominios 2D. El metodo no se restringe a casos bidimensionales, tambien puede extenderse a problemas 3D. Mediante la tecnica propuesta, la mejora de las soluciones puede obtenerse sin incrementar apreciablemente el costo computacional del problema.
