Journal ArticleDOI
Myocardial iron loading in transfusion-dependent thalassemia and sickle cell disease.
TL;DR: Cardiac T2* (magnetic resonance imaging relaxation parameter) is abnormally low in approximately 40% of adults with thalassemia major, suggesting myocardial iron deposition, but it is unknown at what age this occurs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cardiac iron determines cardiac T2*, T2, and T1 in the gerbil model of iron cardiomyopathy.
John C. Wood,Maya Otto-Duessel,Michelle Aguilar,Hanspeter Nick,Marvin D. Nelson,Thomas D. Coates,Harvey Pollack,Rex Moats +7 more
TL;DR: MRI measurements of cardiac T2 and T2* can be used to quantify cardiac iron and the similarity of liver and cardiac iron calibration curves in the gerbil suggests that extrapolation of human liver calibration curves to heart may be a rational approximation in humans.
Journal ArticleDOI
Consensus statement on abusive head trauma in infants and young children
Arabinda K. Choudhary,Sabah Servaes,Thomas L. Slovis,Vincent J. Palusci,Gary L. Hedlund,Sandeep K. Narang,Joelle Anne Moreno,Mark S. Dias,Cindy W. Christian,Marvin D. Nelson,V. Michelle Silvera,Susan Palasis,Maria Raissaki,Andrea Rossi,Amaka C. Offiah +14 more
TL;DR: This consensus document reduces confusion by recommending to judges and jurors the tools necessary to distinguish genuine evidence-based opinions of the relevant medical community from legal arguments or etiological speculations that are unwarranted by the clinical findings, medical evidence and evidence- based literature.

Quantitative Short Echo Time 1H-MR Spectroscopy of Untreated Pediatric Brain Tumors: Preoperative Diagnosis and Characterization
Ashok Panigrahy,Mark D. Krieger,Ignacio Gonzalez-Gomez,X. Liu,J G McComb,Jonathan L. Finlay,Marvin D. Nelson,Floyd H. Gilles,Stefan Bluml +8 more
TL;DR: Quantitative proton MR spectroscopy reveals features of pediatric brain tumors that are likely to improve preoperative diagnoses and to describe metabolic features that distinguish individual tumor types and that may help to improvePreoperative diagnosis of specific tumors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phenylketonuria in adulthood: a collaborative study.
Richard Koch,Barbara K. Burton,George E. Hoganson,R. Peterson,William J. Rhead,Bobbye Rouse,R. Scott,Jon A. Wolff,A. M. Stern,F. Guttler,Marvin D. Nelson,F. de la Cruz,J. Coldwell,Richard W. Erbe,Michael T. Geraghty,C. Shear,J. Thomas,C. Azen +17 more
TL;DR: The medical evaluations revealed that the subjects who maintained a phenylalanine-restricted diet reported fewer problems than the diet discontinuers, who had an increased rate of eczema, asthma, mental disorders, headache, hyperactivity and hypoactivity.
