It is shown that, particularly for terrestrial cellular telephony, the interference-suppression feature of CDMA (code division multiple access) can result in a many-fold increase in capacity over analog and even over competing digital techniques. A single-cell system, such as a hubbed satellite network, is addressed, and the basic expression for capacity is developed. The corresponding expressions for a multiple-cell system are derived. and the distribution on the number of users supportable per cell is determined. It is concluded that properly augmented and power-controlled multiple-cell CDMA promises a quantum increase in current cellular capacity. >

Zehavi (1992) showed that the performance of coded modulation over a Rayleigh fading channel can be improved by bit-wise interleaving the encoder output and by using an appropriate soft-decision metric as an input to a Viterbi decoder. The goal of this paper is to present in a comprehensive fashion the theory underlying bit-interleaved coded modulation, to provide tools for evaluating its performance, and to give guidelines for its design.

Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a popular method for high data rate wireless transmission. OFDM may be combined with antenna arrays at the transmitter and receiver to increase the diversity gain and/or to enhance the system capacity on time-varying and frequency-selective channels, resulting in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration. The paper explores various physical layer research challenges in MIMO-OFDM system design, including physical channel measurements and modeling, analog beam forming techniques using adaptive antenna arrays, space-time techniques for MIMO-OFDM, error control coding techniques, OFDM preamble and packet design, and signal processing algorithms used to perform time and frequency synchronization, channel estimation, and channel tracking in MIMO-OFDM systems. Finally, the paper considers a software radio implementation of MIMO-OFDM.

Bit-interleaved coded modulation

This manuscript introduces a mathematically tractable and accurate model of narrowband power line noise based on experimental measurements. In this paper, the noise is expressed as a Gaussian process whose instantaneous variance is a periodic time function. With this assumption and representation, the cyclostationary features of power line noise can be described in close form. The periodic function that represents the variance is then approximated with a small number of parameters. The noise waveform generated with this model shows good agreement with that of actually measured noise. Noise waveforms generated by different models are also compared with that of the proposed model.

A mathematical model of noise in narrowband power line communication systems

This paper describes the performance of QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) systems under impulsive noise environment. In the analysis, we employ, as a model of the impulsive noise, Middleton's (1977) model labeled class A. First, the statistical characteristics of the in-phase and quadrature components of the impulsive noise are investigated, and it is proved that, in contrast to Gaussian noise, these components are dependent especially for the impulsive noise with small impulsive indices. Next, with consideration of the dependence between the in-phase and quadrature components of the noise, the performance of QAM systems with the conventional receiver designed for Gaussian noise is analyzed. The numerical results show that the performance is much worse than that achieved under Gaussian noise. Moreover, we show the design of the maximum likelihood receiver for class A impulsive noise and the great performance improvement by this receiver is confirmed. >

Performance analysis of QAM systems under class A impulsive noise environment

Throughput analysis of direct-sequence spread spectrum multiple access (DS/SSMA) unslotted ALOHA with fixed packet length is presented. As the levels of multi-user interference fluctuate during the packet transmission, we calculate the packet error probability and the throughput by considering not only the number of overlapped packets but also the amount of time overlap. On the assumption that packet generation is Poisson, the system can be thought as the queueing system M/D//spl infin/. With Gaussian approximation of multi-user interference, we obtain the throughput as the function of the number of chips in a bit, the packet length, and the offered load of the system. We also analyze the channel load sensing protocol (CLSP), and obtain the optimum threshold of CLSP.

Throughput analysis of DS/SSMA unslotted ALOHA system with fixed packet length

In this paper, we consider visible light communication systems using LED array as a transmitter and high-speed camera as a receiver for Intelligent Transport System (ITS). Previously, we have proposed the hierarchical coding scheme which allocates data to spatial frequency components of the image depending on the priority. This scheme is possible to receive information of the high-priority even if communication distance is long. However, we need to distinguish multi-valued data from the received image by using a hierarchical coding. In this paper, we propose two improved decoding methods, and demonstrate to distinguish multi-valued data more correctly in the experiment.
