A topological superconductor A promising path toward topological quantum computing involves exotic quasiparticles called the Majorana bound states (MBSs). MBSs have been observed in heterostructures that require careful nanofabrication, but the complexity of such systems makes further progress tricky. Zhang et al. identified a topological superconductor in which MBSs may be observed in a simpler way by looking into the cores of vortices induced by an external magnetic field. Using angle-resolved photoemission, the researchers found that the surface of the iron superconductor FeTe0.55Se0.45 satisfies the required conditions for topological superconductivity. Science, this issue p. 182 Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy indicates that FeTe0.55Se0.45 harbors Dirac-cone–type spin-helical surface states. Topological superconductors are predicted to host exotic Majorana states that obey non-Abelian statistics and can be used to implement a topological quantum computer. Most of the proposed topological superconductors are realized in difficult-to-fabricate heterostructures at very low temperatures. By using high-resolution spin-resolved and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we find that the iron-based superconductor FeTe1–xSex (x = 0.45; superconducting transition temperature Tc = 14.5 kelvin) hosts Dirac-cone–type spin-helical surface states at the Fermi level; the surface states exhibit an s-wave superconducting gap below Tc. Our study shows that the surface states of FeTe0.55Se0.45 are topologically superconducting, providing a simple and possibly high-temperature platform for realizing Majorana states.

Observation of topological superconductivity on the surface of iron-based superconductor

A quantum spin Hall insulator hosts topological states at the one-dimensional edge, along which backscattering by nonmagnetic impurities is strictly prohibited and dissipationless current flows. Its 3D analogue, a weak topological insulator (WTI), possesses similar quasi-1D topological states confined at side surfaces of crystals. The enhanced confinement could provide a route for dissipationless current and better advantages for applications relative to the widely studied strong topological insulators. However, the topological side surface is usually not cleavable and is thus hard to observe by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), which has hindered the revealing of the electronic properties of WTIs. Here, we visualize the topological surface states of the WTI candidate ZrTe5 for the first time by spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy: a quasi-1D band with spin-momentum locking was revealed on the side surface. We further demonstrate that the bulk band gap in ZrTe5 is controlled by strain to the crystal, realizing a more stabilized WTI state or an ideal Dirac semimetal state depending on the direction of the external strain. The highly directional spin-current and the tunable band gap we found in ZrTe5 will provide an excellent platform for applications.

One-dimensional van der Waals quantum materials

We describe a spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (SARPES) apparatus with a vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) laser ($h\nu$= 6.994 eV) developed at the Laser and Synchrotron Research Center at the Institute for Solid State Physics, The University of Tokyo. The spectrometer consists of a hemispherical photoelectron analyzer equipped with an electron deflector function and twin very-low-energy-electron-diffraction-type spin detectors, which allows us to analyze the spin vector of a photoelectron three-dimensionally with both high energy and angular resolutions. The combination of the high-performance spectrometer and the high-photon-flux VUV laser can achieve an energy resolution of 1.7 meV for SARPES. We demonstrate that the present laser-SARPES machine realizes a quick SARPES on the spin-split band structure of a Bi(111) film even with 7 meV energy and 0.7$^\circ$ angular resolutions along the entrance-slit direction. This laser-SARPES machine is applicable to the investigation of spin-dependent electronic states on an energy scale of a few meV.

High-resolution three-dimensional spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectrometer using vacuum ultraviolet laser light

The electronic band structure of MoS2 exerts far‐ranging effects on the applications of these materials, ranging from chemical catalysis, electronic, and magnetic behaviors. However, the underlying relationship between the electronic band structure and activity is largely unknown in heterogeneous catalysis including the hydrogen evolution reaction, partly due to the lack of a controllable methodology to achieve desirable electronic band structures in the 2H‐phase MoS2. Herein it is demonstrated that dual dopants can engineer the band structure of MoS2 by substituting into the adjacent Mo sites. Specifically, these constructed PdRe dimers bridged by sulfur (PdSRe sites) introduce conducting electronic states around the Fermi level to increase the metallic characteristics of MoS2, resulting in metallic‐like behavior, which is initially semiconducting. Furthermore, the efficacy of inducing a phase conversion from 2H to metallic 1T is higher for codoping with dual dopants as compared to that for the use of a single dopant, thereby generating more intrinsically active PdS*Mo sites to further increase active sites density. Ultimately, this leads to the MoS2 catalyst showing a low overpotential of 46 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a high exchange current density of 1.524 mA cm−2, along with superior operating durability.

Band Engineering Induced Conducting 2H‐Phase MoS2 by PdSRe Sites Modification for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Control of the phase transition from topological to normal insulators can allow for an on/off switching of spin current. While topological phase transitions have been realized by elemental substitution in semiconducting alloys, such an approach requires preparation of materials with various compositions. Thus it is quite far from a feasible device application, which demands a reversible operation. Here we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to visualize the strain-driven band-structure evolution of the quasi-one-dimensional superconductor TaSe3. We demonstrate that it undergoes reversible strain-induced topological phase transitions from a strong topological insulator phase with spin-polarized, quasi-one-dimensional topological surface states, to topologically trivial semimetal and band insulating phases. The quasi-one-dimensional superconductor TaSe3 provides a suitable platform for engineering the topological spintronics, for example as an on/off switch for a spin current that is robust against impurity scattering.

Visualization of the strain-induced topological phase transition in a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor TaSe3

Since the discovery of topological insulators (TIs), controlling the fascinating properties has been attempted. The most direct way for it is to utilize the phase transition from the topological to normal insulators, which allows an on/off switching of spin current robust against the impurity scattering. The topological phase transition has been realized by elemental substitution in semiconducting alloys, which can tune the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) or lattice constant, leading to the band inversion or eliminating it. However, such treatment requires elaborate preparation of materials with various compositions, thus it is quite far from a feasible device application, which demands a reversible operation. Here we demonstrate a quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) superconductor TaSe3 to be the best material which realizes the reversible on/off switching of topological spin current only by applying uniaxial pressure to a crystal, through the observation of band structure with the high-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and spin-resolved ARPES (SARPES). Firstly, we uncover that TaSe3 is in a strong TI phase with the spin-polarized, quasi-1D topological surface states (TSSs), which benefits from highly directional, dense spin currents that are protected against backscattering. Most importantly, we present the first direct observation of the strain-induced topological phase transition in solids, through the investigation of TaSe3. The quasi-1D superconductor TaSe3 provides an ideal platform for engineering the topological spintronics which exploits the topological state, its interplay with superconductivity, and the topological phase transition.
