Methods, apparatus, and articles of manufacture to power a device using wirelessly transmitted power are disclosed. Initially, a wireless base unit obtains a request for wireless power. The wireless base unit then determines a power requirement associated with a wireless field unit and compares the power requirement to a remaining power capacity of the wireless base unit. The wireless base unit then transmits power wirelessly to the wireless field unit based on the comparison of the power requirement to the remaining power capacity. The wirelessly transmitted power is associated with powering a field device operatively coupled to the wireless field unit.

Method and apparatus for coupling an antenna to a device

A distributed antenna and backhaul system provide network connectivity for a small cell deployment. Rather than building new structures, and installing additional fiber and cable, embodiments described herein disclose using high-bandwidth, millimeter-wave communications and existing power line infrastructure. Above ground backhaul connections via power lines and line-of-sight millimeter-wave band signals as well as underground backhaul connections via buried electrical conduits can provide connectivity to the distributed base stations. An overhead millimeter-wave system can also be used to provide backhaul connectivity. Modules can be placed onto existing infrastructure, such as streetlights and utility poles, and the modules can contain base stations and antennas to transmit the millimeter-waves to and from other modules.

Backhaul link for distributed antenna system

A distributed antenna system is provided that frequency shifts the output of one or more microcells to a 60 GHz or higher frequency range for transmission to a set of distributed antennas. The cellular band outputs of these microcell base station devices are used to modulate a 60 GHz (or higher) carrier wave, yielding a group of subcarriers on the 60 GHz carrier wave. This group will then be transmitted in the air via analog microwave RF unit, after which it can be repeated or radiated to the surrounding area. The repeaters amplify the signal and resend it on the air again toward the next repeater. In places where a microcell is required, the 60 GHz signal is shifted in frequency back to its original frequency (e.g., the 1.9 GHz cellular band) and radiated locally to nearby mobile devices.

Remote distributed antenna system

In a transmission apparatus 8, modulation sections 201 convert digital data signals into DSL modulated signals, which are thereafter subjected to frequency conversion so as to span respectively different frequency bands. A combination section 207 frequency-division-multiplexes output signals from the modulation sections 201. An optical modulation section 102 converts the frequency-division-multiplexed signal into an optical signal. An optical detection section 104 reconverts the optical signal which has been transmitted over the optical transmission section 103 into an electrical signal. A splitter section 408 demultiplexes the electrical signal. Each of second frequency conversion sections 811 subjects either one of the demultiplexed signals to frequency conversion, and sends a resultant DSL modulated signal onto an electrical transmission section 105. The DSL demodulation section 106 reconverts the DSL modulated signal which has been transmitted over the electrical transmission section 105 into the original digital data signal.

Optical transmission apparatus

We investigate the Yuen 2000 (so-called Y-00)-protocol, which can realize a randomized stream cipher with high bit rate (Gbit/s) for long distances (several hundreds km). The randomized stream cipher with randomization by quantum noise based on the Y-00 protocol is called a quantum stream cipher in this paper, and it may have security against known plaintext attacks which has no analog with any conventional symmetric key ciphers. We present a simple cryptanalysis based on an attacker's heterodyne measurement and a quantum unambiguous measurement to make clear the strength of the Y-00 protocol in real communication. In addition, we give a design for the implementation of an intensity-modulation scheme and report an experimental demonstration of $1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{Gbit}∕\mathrm{s}$ quantum stream cipher through a $20\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{km}$-long transmission line.

Quantum stream cipher by the Yuen 2000 protocol: Design and experiment by an intensity-modulation scheme

Modulators respectively modulate baseband signals into IF signals having different frequencies. A multiplexer multiplexes the IF signals. An electrical-optical converter intensity modulates the multiplexed IF signals into optical signals. A local oscillation signal source outputs a predetermined local oscillation signal. An external modulator intensity-modulates the optical signal using the local oscillation signal. An optical branching portion branches the intensity-modulated optical signal and respectively outputs branched optical signals to radio base stations. An optical-electrical converter converts the optical signal into an electric signal, to obtain an RF signal by frequency-converting the IF signal. An antenna only transmits a component having a desired radio frequency extracted in a band filter from the RF signal to a subscriber terminal. Frequency conversion from the IF signal to the RF signal is thus optically performed, whereby the frequency or electrical-optical converter is shared among the radio base stations.

Optical transmission system for radio access and high frequency optical transmitter

In an optical transmission system, a multiplexer frequency-division-multiplexes a plurality of signals, and outputs the resultant signal to an FM modulator. The FM modulator converts the frequency-division-multiplexed signal into an FM modulated signal through frequency modulation using the frequency-division-multiplexed signal as an original signal. A frequency-divider converts the FM modulated signal into a frequency-divided FM modulated signal whose frequency is ½ n (n is an integer of not less than 1) the frequency of the FM modulated signal. An optical modulator has a predetermined input-voltage vs. output-optical-power characteristic, and is biased at the minimum point (voltage) about the output optical power. The optical modulator modulates an unmodulated light fed from a light source with the applied frequency-divided FM modulated signal to produce an optical signal whose optical carrier component is suppressed, and sends the optical signal to an optical transmission line. An optical receiver receives the optical signal, and square-law detects the signal to convert into an FM modulated signal. A FM demodulator demodulates the FM modulated signal to reproduce the original frequency-division-multiplexed signal. This configuration makes it possible to narrow the bandwidth of an FM modulated signal while increasing the frequency deviation thereof, and realize high-quality signal transmission as a result.

System for optically transmitting frequency-division-multiplexed signal and transmitter therefor

The signal converter of the present invention receives a multichannel video signal and converts the video signal into a microwave signal, the phase of which has been modulated with the video signal. The signal converter includes: a laser light source; a modulating section for modulating the phase of output light of the laser light source with the multichannel video signal and modulating the intensity of the output light with the microwave signal; and a light receiver for receiving the output light modulated by the modulating section and for outputting the microwave signal, the phase of which has been modulated with the multichannel video signal.
