While the Transformer architecture has become the de-facto standard for natural language processing tasks, its applications to computer vision remain limited. In vision, attention is either applied in conjunction with convolutional networks, or used to replace certain components of convolutional networks while keeping their overall structure in place. We show that this reliance on CNNs is not necessary and a pure transformer applied directly to sequences of image patches can perform very well on image classification tasks. When pre-trained on large amounts of data and transferred to multiple mid-sized or small image recognition benchmarks (ImageNet, CIFAR-100, VTAB, etc.), Vision Transformer (ViT) attains excellent results compared to state-of-the-art convolutional networks while requiring substantially fewer computational resources to train.

Tabu Search

We consider the problem of cooperation among a collection of vehicles performing a shared task using intervehicle communication to coordinate their actions. Tools from algebraic graph theory prove useful in modeling the communication network and relating its topology to formation stability. We prove a Nyquist criterion that uses the eigenvalues of the graph Laplacian matrix to determine the effect of the communication topology on formation stability. We also propose a method for decentralized information exchange between vehicles. This approach realizes a dynamical system that supplies each vehicle with a common reference to be used for cooperative motion. We prove a separation principle that decomposes formation stability into two components: Stability of this is achieved information flow for the given graph and stability of an individual vehicle for the given controller. The information flow can thus be rendered highly robust to changes in the graph, enabling tight formation control despite limitations in intervehicle communication capability.

The Next Generation of Single Loop Controllers: Hardware and Algorithms for the Discrete/Decimal Process Controller

In human-robot interaction (HRI) systems, such as autonomous vehicles, understanding and representing human behavior are important. Human behavior is naturally rich and diverse. Cost/reward learning, as an efficient way to learn and represent human behavior, has been successfully applied in many domains. Most of traditional inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) algorithms, however, cannot adequately capture the diversity of human behavior since they assume that all behavior in a given dataset is generated by a single cost function. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic IRL framework that directly learns a distribution of cost functions in continuous domain. Evaluations on both synthetic data and real human driving data are conducted. Both the quantitative and subjective results show that our proposed framework can better express diverse human driving behaviors, as well as extracting different driving styles that match what human participants interpret in our user study.

Expressing Diverse Human Driving Behavior with Probabilistic Rewards and Online Inference

We propose the cascade attribute learning network (CALNet), which can learn attributes in a control task separately and assemble them together. Our contribution is twofold: first we propose attribute learning in reinforcement learning (RL). Attributes used to be modeled using constraint functions or terms in the objective function, making it hard to transfer. Attribute learning, on the other hand, models these task properties as modules in the policy network. We also propose using novel cascading compensative networks in the CALNet to learn and assemble attributes. Using the CALNet, one can zero shoot an unseen task by separately learning all its attributes, and assembling the attribute modules. We have validated the capacity of our model on a wide variety of control problems with attributes in time, position, velocity and acceleration phases.

Cascade Attribute Learning Network

This paper presents the design and implementation of a composite controller to reduce the effect of force ripple in a linear motor wafer stage system. The composite controller consists of two components: 1) a PID feedback controller and 2) an adaptive feedforward compensator. The feedback controller is tuned to achieve good transient response and enhanced robustness of the system. Force ripples are a major source of tracking error in linear motor precision positioning systems. An approximation of the nonlinear force ripple model can be obtained by expressing the ripple as the sum of a sequence of sinusoidal harmonics, multiplied by the motor current. The force ripple is first approximated by on-line adaptive estimation of the unknown coefficients associated with each harmonic, and then compensated with a feedforward term. Experimental results on a prototype single degree of freedom wafer stage are presented to show the performance improvement obtained by the proposed control scheme.Copyright © 2007 by ASME
