Journal ArticleDOI
Beyond the critical period: longitudinal study of 8-year outcome in first-episode non-affective psychosis.
Niall Crumlish,Peter Whitty,Mary Clarke,Stephen Browne,Moayyad Kamali,Maurice Gervin,O. McTigue,Anthony Kinsella,John L. Waddington,Conall Larkin,Eadbhard O'Callaghan +10 more
TL;DR: Results provide qualified support for the critical period hypothesis and could be extended to include the prodrome as well as early psychosis, and duration of untreated illness has any independent effect on outcome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Determinants of quality of life at first presentation with schizophrenia
Stephen Browne,Mary Clarke,Maurice Gervin,John L. Waddington,Conal Larkin,Eadbhard O'Callaghan +5 more
TL;DR: Reducing the duration of untreated psychosis may have a beneficial effect on the subsequent QOL of patients presenting with schizophrenia, and may warrant specific treatment interventions to prevent the development of secondary handicaps.
Journal ArticleDOI
Incidence and clinical correlates of aggression and violence at presentation in patients with first episode psychosis.
Sharon Foley,Brendan D. Kelly,Mary Clarke,O. McTigue,Maurice Gervin,Moyyad Kamali,Conall Larkin,Eadbhard O'Callaghan,Stephen Browne +8 more
TL;DR: Overall, despite a high rate of verbal aggression, physical violence towards other people is uncommon in individuals presenting with first episode psychosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Untreated illness and outcome of psychosis.
Mary Clarke,Peter Whitty,Stephen Browne,O. McTigue,Moayyad Kamali,Maurice Gervin,Anthony Kinsella,John L. Waddington,Conal Larkin,Eadbhard O'Callaghan +9 more
TL;DR: This study extends the findings of short-term follow-up studies by confirming an association between duration of untreated psychosis and ‘midterm’ outcome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diagnostic specificity and predictors of neurological soft signs in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other psychoses over the first 4 years of illness.
Peter Whitty,Mary Clarke,O. McTigue,Stephen Browne,Maurice Gervin,M. Kamali,Abbie Lane,Anthony Kinsella,John L. Waddington,Conall Larkin,Conall Larkin,Eadbhard O'Callaghan,Eadbhard O'Callaghan +12 more
TL;DR: Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are indistinguishable in terms of neurodysfunction at presentation, but at 4 years NSS closely parallel psychopathology and mixed-handedness indicating that NSS may be a function of these factors or possibly an independent factor operates equally upon both symptoms and neurological function.
