Journal ArticleDOI

Assessment of Body Composition in Health and Disease Using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) and Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA): A Critical Overview

TL;DR: This review aims to provide useful insights mostly into the use of BC methods in prevention and clinical practice (ambulatory or bedridden patients), and stimulate a discussion on the topic and reinvigorate the crucial role of BC evaluation in diagnostic and clinical investigation protocols.
Journal ArticleDOI

Serum paraoxonase is reduced in type 1 diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic, first degree relatives; influence on the ability of HDL to protect LDL from oxidation

TL;DR: Serum concentrations of the antioxidant enzyme paraoxonase are significantly lower in type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic, first-degree relatives, independently of known gene polymorphisms, consistent with the contention that modifications to serum paraox onase in type1 patients can increase risk of lipoprotein oxidation and, consequently, risk of vascular disease.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Possible Protective Role of Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 on Endothelium During the Meal and Evidence for an “Endothelial Resistance” to Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 in Diabetes

TL;DR: The data suggest that during the meal GLP-1 can simultaneously exert an incretin effect on insulin secretion and a protective effect on endothelial function, reasonably controlling oxidative stress generation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Early Changes in Bioelectrical Estimates of Body Composition in Chronic Kidney Disease

TL;DR: Despite the absence of overt malnutrition, patients with CKD exhibit altered BIA variables from the early phases of renal disease, which are related to the renal dysfunction, are more marked in the presence of diabetes, and mainly indicate the existence of overhydration in the absenceof edema.
