Abstract: This paper outlines possible evolution trends of e-learning, supported by most recent advancements in the World Wide Web. Specifically, we consider a situation in which the Semantic Web technology and tools are widely adopted, and fully integrated within a context of applications exploiting the Internet of Things paradigm. Such a scenario will dramatically impact on learning activities, as well as on teaching strategies and instructional design methodology. In particular, the models characterized by learning pervasiveness and interactivity will be greatly empowered.

Abstract: The rapid evolving of web technologies has brought to the increasingly diffusion of applications making the Web an interactive social network environment. The World Wide Web Consortium and several research centers are working on the integration of such technologies into the project of a Semantic Web. Consequently, e-learning systems and tools supporting instructional content design could take advantage of these advancements. In this scenario, according to a social-constructivist approach, the authors discuss the adoption of Semantic Wiki as a collaborative environment to design educational contents. The paper will outline the application perspectives and the strategies to adopt, in order to facilitate meaningful learning processes, and the potential advantages that Semantic Wikis would bring from the point of view of knowledge management, as well as for the re-use of learning resources.

Abstract: The evolution of the Internet, distributed architectures, and Grid-oriented frameworks can change the way people acquire and disseminate both knowledge and experience, thus the way they learn. Therefore, one can envisage new e-learning models, based on a more efficient users’ interaction, that also empowers the hands-on experience. This will improve learning outcomes, while reducing the need of physical devices and removing the inherent boundaries. Moreover, this reduces costs by promoting the sharing of resources and learning assets. From this perspective, the chapter discusses the integration of classical e-learning paradigms with new advancements of distributed computing, such as: 1) the usage of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) to produce network-independent overlays, also by enabling direct student-to-student exchanges; 2) the integration, through grid-based middleware, of real or virtual devices, plants and Sensors Network (SN) within the e-learning environment; and 3) the adoption of a distributed e-learning system to spread culture through mobile devices, with an emphasis on satellite communications.

Abstract: The development of grid-oriented technologies revamps the idea of using virtual laboratories for education in schools and universities, and for the training of professionals. This is a challenging idea, both from the pedagogical and the technical point of view. The model of hands-on experience can be implemented reducing the need of physical machineries, thus removing inherent boundaries and limitations. Moreover, this decreases costs and promotes the sharing of exclusive resources.In this perspective, the chapter presents possible architectural blueprints for the usage of distributed simulation and emulation facilities for e-learning purposes, as well as for scientific research, resulting in a novel grid-supported collaborative learning environment.

Abstract: Semantic Wiki consentono, tramite un linguaggio comprensibile agli elaboratori e formalmente definito, l’annotazione semantica dei contenuti delle pagine Wiki e la rappresentazione esplicita delle relazioni di significato tra essi presenti. Essi offrono la possibilita di sfruttare sia i vantaggi delle tecnologie basate su ontologie sia i meccanismi collaborativi propri dei Wiki. L’articolo descrive un progetto, denominato Semantic WikiSUN, avviato per indagare le prospettive didattiche di tali sistemi. Esso e basato su un quadro teorico complesso che integra evidenze neurocognitive, teorie dell’apprendimento e modelli costruttivisti-sociali della conoscenza. Obiettivo del contributo e, sulla base della esperienza intrapresa, discutere potenzialita e criticita didattiche dei Semantic Wiki, estendendo talvolta la riflessione a considerazioni piu generali sui processi di apprendimento mediati da tecnologie semantiche.

Abstract: Questo articolo delinea alcune delle possibili linee evolutive dell'e-learning, favorite dalla consolidata presenza dell'insieme di strumenti e tecnologie che caratterizzano il Web Semantico e da un contesto applicativo che vede affermarsi il paradigma tecnologico dell'Internet delle Cose. Tali scenari, ormai vicini al vivere quotidiano, influenzeranno le modalita di apprendimento, cosi come le strategie e le tecniche di progettazione della formazione, favorendo modelli in cui pervasivita dell’apprendimento, interattivita delle risorse didattiche e personalizzazione assumeranno un ruolo sempre piu centrale.
