The real greywater samples collected from the IIT Roorkee hostel have been treated using waste biomass-derived activated carbon in continuous operation. The synthesized ZnCl2 impregnated sawdust activated carbon (SAC) has been used to remove the COD, BOD, and TDS concentration from the greywater. The SAC characterization through FESEM-EDX, BET, and FTIR has been performed. The initial concentration of COD, BOD, and TDS in greywater was 670, 275, and 1819.52 mg/L, respectively. The sand column was used to retain the larger suspended solids and dissolved organic matter up to a certain concentration. Sand column effluent with the concentration of 412, 180, and 1116.8 mg/L for COD, BOD, and TDS respectively, was drawn to the adsorption column for studying the influence of flow rate (5, 10, and 15 mL/min) at 15 cm of bed height and the effect of bed height (10 and 20 cm) at 10 mL/min of flow rate. At optimum condition of 10 mL/min flow rate and 10 cm of bed height, the observed adsorption capacities are 3904.62, 1967.3, and 14,936.92 mg/g for the removal of COD, BOD, and TDS, respectively. Further, to comprehend the behavior of the breakthrough curves eight mathematical models, namely, Bohart-Adams, Thomas, Wolborska, Yoon-Nelson, Log Gompertz, Gompertz, Dose-Response, and Bed Depth Service Time (BDST), have been tested. 

Modeling of continuous adsorption of greywater pollutants onto sawdust activated carbon bed integrated with sand column

In this work, the mathematical modeling of acetaminophen (ACT) removal in a fixed-bed adsorption column using sugarcane bagasse (SB) as adsorbent was studied. Experimental data were fitted to six analytical models: Thomas, modified dose-response, Yoon-Nelson, Bohart-Adams, Wang, and Wolborska. Three experimental tests were carried out at 2.5 mL/min of flow rate, 57 mg/L of ACT concentration, and bed heights of 23, 33, and 43 cm. The predicted breakthrough curve by modified dose-response model agreed acceptably (R2 > 0.91) with experimental curves. Besides, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model was developed to simulate and analyze the ACT concentration inside of the adsorption column and the wall channeling effect. The simulated breakthrough curve had a good reproducibility with experimental data, the maximum error between experimental and predicted points was 7.03%. In addition, the CFD model shows a high mass transfer zone and a slow adsorption rate in all three tests of ACT adsorption; the mass transfer zone grew as the bed height increased, whereas the wall channeling effects disappeared with increasing bed height. Also, the diffusion resistances and axial dispersion phenomenon were relevant. The results of this research work demonstrate the usefulness of computational fluid dynamics analysis to understand better the adsorption process.

Adsorption properties of sugarcane bagasse and corn cob for the sulfamethoxazole removal in a fixed-bed column

Wastewater pollution is an urgent environmental concern. The negative effects of pollution on both humans and the environment have become a subject of intense discussion. Several techniques have been developed for the removal of pollutants from water. Most of these techniques adopt a combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes, which include photo-oxidation, chemical coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, and adsorption. Nevertheless, adsorption is one of the most efficient methods for removal of pollutants from water, offering many economical, technological, and ecological advantages. The search for new low-cost technologies to remove contaminants from aqueous solution will be well embraced. Low-cost adsorbents can be employed to remove recalcitrant compounds from aqueous solution inexpensively and can be effective for removing both organic and inorganic contaminants. Biosorption technology using different biomasses (agro-industrial waste or organic waste that are considered composting material) is a promising alternative for the treatment of effluents that contain pharmaceuticals and heavy metals. These processes have certain advantages from both economic and environmental points of view, such as availability, abundance, the renewable nature of the adsorbent material, their low cost, and ease of operation of the treatment plant. Consequently, it is important to find low-cost alternative materials instead of traditional. Among the different agro-industrial wastes, sugarcane bagasse, cocoa shell, peanut husk, among others, are attractive materials for removing toxic heavy metals and pharmaceutical products from wastewater. To date, several researchers have reported on removal of different pollutants by using sorbents.
