Journal ArticleDOI
The psychobiology of depression and resilience to stress: implications for prevention and treatment.
TL;DR: Potential psychological, social, spiritual, and neurobiological approaches to enhancing stress resilience, decreasing the likelihood of developing stress- induced depression/anxiety, and treating stress-induced psychopathology are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Childhood Trauma Associated With Smaller Hippocampal Volume in Women With Major Depression

Miller,Eric Anderson,Eric Anderson,Eric Anderson,Richard A. Bronen,Richard A. Bronen,Richard A. Bronen,Marijn E. Brummer,Marijn E. Brummer,Marijn E. Brummer,Lawrence H. Staib,Lawrence H. Douglas Bremner,J. Douglas Bremner,J. Douglas Bremner +33 more
TL;DR: A smaller hippocampal volume in adult women with major depressive disorder was observed exclusively in those who had a history of severe and prolonged physical and/or sexual abuse in childhood.
Journal ArticleDOI
MRI and PET Study of Deficits in Hippocampal Structure and Function in Women With Childhood Sexual Abuse and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
J. Douglas Bremner,Meena Vythilingam,Eric Vermetten,Steven M. Southwick,Thomas H. McGlashan,Ahsan Nazeer,Sarfraz Khan,L. Viola Vaccarino,Robert Soufer,Pradeep K. Garg,Chin K. Ng,Lawrence H. Staib,James S. Duncan,Dennis S. Charney +13 more
TL;DR: The results of this study are consistent with deficits in hippocampal function and structure in abuse-related PTSD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reduced volume of orbitofrontal cortex in major depression
J. Douglas Bremner,Meena Vythilingam,Eric Vermetten,Ahsan Nazeer,Jahangir Adil,Sarfraz Khan,Lawrence H. Staib,Dennis S. Charney +7 more
TL;DR: These findings are consistent with smaller orbitofrontal cortical volume in depression.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hippocampal volume, memory, and cortisol status in major depressive disorder: effects of treatment.
Meena Vythilingam,Eric Vermetten,George M. Anderson,David A. Luckenbaugh,Eric R. Anderson,Joseph Snow,Lawrence H. Staib,Dennis S. Charney,J. Douglas Bremner +8 more
TL;DR: Focal declarative memory deficits in depression supported localized hippocampal dysfunction in depressed patients, suggesting that antidepressants may improve hippocampal function in the absence of detectable structural changes.
