Privacy preserving association rule mining in vertically partitioned data

The Man-In-The-Middle (MITM) attack is one of the most well known attacks in computer security, representing one of the biggest concerns for security professionals. MITM targets the actual data that flows between endpoints, and the confidentiality and integrity of the data itself. In this paper, we extensively review the literature on MITM to analyse and categorize the scope of MITM attacks, considering both a reference model, such as the open systems interconnection (OSI) model, as well as two specific widely used network technologies, i.e., GSM and UMTS. In particular, we classify MITM attacks based on several parameters, like location of an attacker in the network, nature of a communication channel, and impersonation techniques. Based on an impersonation techniques classification, we then provide execution steps for each MITM class. We survey existing countermeasures and discuss the comparison among them. Finally, based on our analysis, we propose a categorisation of MITM prevention mechanisms, and we identify some possible directions for future research.

A Survey of Man In The Middle Attacks

The Internet of Things or "IoT" defines a highly interconnected network of heterogeneous devices where all kinds of communications seem to be possible, even unauthorized ones. As a result, the security requirement for such network becomes critical whilst common standard Internet security protocols are recognized as unusable in this type of networks, particularly due to some classes of IoT devices with constrained resources. The document discusses the applicability and limitations of existing IP-based Internet security protocols and other security protocols used in wireless sensor networks, which are potentially suitable in the context of IoT. The analysis of these protocols is discussed based on a taxonomy focusing on the key distribution mechanism.

Survey on secure communication protocols for the Internet of Things

AD HOC is characterized by simple organizing, low cost, strong survival ability, and adaptation to many applications and so on. The routing principles play an important role in the realization of the above target. This paper presents and discusses some basic principles of routing and pays high attention to how these differ from conventional routing.

Routing in AD HOC Networks of Mobile Hosts

We introduce a new sublinear space data structure--the count-min sketch--for summarizing data streams. Our sketch allows fundamental queries in data stream summarization such as point, range, and inner product queries to be approximately answered very quickly; in addition, it can be applied to solve several important problems in data streams such as finding quantiles, frequent items, etc. The time and space bounds we show for using the CM sketch to solve these problems significantly improve those previously known--typically from 1/e2 to 1/e in factor.

A high performance and intrinsically secure key establishment protocol for wireless sensor networks

The widespread use of wireless cellular networks has made security an ever increasing concern. GSM is the most popular wireless cellular standard, but its security is an issue. The most critical weakness in the GSM protocol is the use of one-way entity authentication, i.e., only the mobile station is authenticated by the network. This creates many security problems including vulnerability against man-in-the-middle attacks. Several solutions have been proposed to establish mutual entity authentication. In this paper, it is shown that these solutions cannot provide bilateral authentication. To solve this problem, we propose a novel mutual entity authentication using the TESLA protocol. The proposed solution not only provides secure bilateral authentication, but also decreases the call setup time and the required connection bandwidth. An important feature of the proposed protocol is that it is compatible with the GSM standard.

Internet key exchange (IKE) manages keys securely after they have been agreed upon and IKE exchanges the keys in an authenticated way. IKE has some deficiencies, the three most important of which are the excessive number of messages, IKE's vulnerability. to denial of service (DoS) and the complexity of IKE's specification. To solve these problems, some successors have been presented for IKE such as IKEv2, SIGMA and JFK. We have also tried to introduce a suitable successor for IKE in the extended version of this paper. The proposed protocol has all the functionalities of other successor protocols; however, the number of messages in this protocol are less than other protocols and the method for the prevention of DoS attack in this protocol is better than the other methods.

A proposed protocol for Internet key exchange (IKE)

This paper focuses on contention-based Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols used in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). We propose a novel MAC protocol called Adaptive Backoff Tuning MAC (ABTMAC) based on IEEE 802.11 DCF. In our proposed MAC protocol, we utilize a fixed transmission attempt rate and each node dynamically adjusts its backoff window size considering the current network status. We determined the appropriate transmission attempt rate for both cases where the Request-To-Send/Clear-To-Send (RTS/CTS) mechanism was and was not employed. Robustness against performance degradation caused by the difference between desired and actual values of the attempt rate parameter is considered when setting it. The performance of the protocol is evaluated analytically and through simulations. These results indicate that a wireless network utilizing ABTMAC performs better than one using IEEE 802.11 DCF.
