Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. We describe Hi-C, a method that probes the three-dimensional architecture of whole genomes by coupling proximity-based ligation with massively parallel sequencing. We constructed spatial proximity maps of the human genome with Hi-C at a resolution of 1 megabase. These maps confirm the presence of chromosome territories and the spatial proximity of small, gene-rich chromosomes. We identified an additional level of genome organization that is characterized by the spatial segregation of open and closed chromatin to form two genome-wide compartments. At the megabase scale, the chromatin conformation is consistent with a fractal globule, a knot-free, polymer conformation that enables maximally dense packing while preserving the ability to easily fold and unfold any genomic locus. The fractal globule is distinct from the more commonly used globular equilibrium model. Our results demonstrate the power of Hi-C to map the dynamic conformations of whole genomes.

Stochastic Dynamics of Growing Films

First proposed as an empirical rule over half a century ago, the Richards growth equation has been frequently invoked in population modeling and pandemic forecasting. Central to this model is the advent of a fractional exponent $\gamma$, typically fitted to the data. While various motivations for this non-analytical form have been proposed, it is still considered foremost an empirical fitting procedure. Here, we find that Richards-like growth laws emerge naturally from generic analytical growth rules in a distributed population, upon inclusion of {\bf (i)} migration (spatial diffusion) amongst different locales, and {\bf (ii)} stochasticity in the growth rate, also known as "seascape noise." The latter leads to a wide (power-law) distribution in local population number that, while smoothened through the former, can still result in a fractional growth law for the overall population. This justification of the Richards growth law thus provides a testable connection to the distribution of constituents of the population.

A Seascape Origin of Richards Growth

We study polymers attached to spherical (circular) or paraboloidal (parabolic) probes in three (two) dimensions. Both self-avoiding and random walks are examined numerically. The behavior of a polymer of size $R_0$ attached to the tip of a probe with radius of curvature $R$, differs qualitatively for large and small values of the ratio $s=R_0/R$. We demonstrate that the scaled compliance (inverse force constant) $S/R_0^2$, and scaled mean position of the polymer end-point $ /R$ can be expressed as a function of $s$. Scaled compliance is anisotropic, and quite large in the direction parallel to the surface when $R_0\sim R$. The exponent $\gamma$, characterizing the number of polymer configurations, crosses over from a value of $\gamma_1$ - characteristic of a planar boundary - at small $s$ to one reflecting the overall shape of the probe at large $s$. For a spherical probe the crossover is to an unencumbered polymer, while for a parabolic probe we cannot rule out a new exponent.

Statistical and dynamical properties of a vibrated granular polymer

We examine a method to mimic active sites in proteins by chemical imprinting of p-valent templates in heteropolymer gels. Previous studies have confirmed successful formation of sites by adsorption of targets with p >/= 2 contacts. We investigate the recovery of sites with p = 2 imprinted by lead methacrylate Pb(MAAc)(2) (placing two carboxyl groups in close proximity). The improved binding ability of gels with more cross-links, and the relative insensitivity to changes in gel volume contradict simple theory. We conclude that adsorber pairs are predominantly located on the same polymer chain, posing a challenge to mimicking protein-like function.
