Journal ArticleDOI

Predation: a causal mechanism for variability in intertidal bivalve populations

TL;DR: Results from the enclosure indicate that crab predation was responsible for a reduction of both species of bivalve even at high naturally occurring crab densities, which may be one of the causal mechanisms for both the spatial and temporal variability shown in populations of M. balthica and C. edule.
Journal ArticleDOI

Can postlarval bivalves select sediment type during settlement? A field test with Macoma balthica (L.) and Cerastoderma edule (L.)

TL;DR: Sediment-related patterns observed in adults of these species must be due to other mechanisms, possibly postsettlement predation by Carcinus maenas and/or an ability to leave less-preferred sediments in a series of migrations until the preferred habitat is found.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effects of the adult density of Macoma balthica on the recruitment of juvenile bivalves: a field experiment

TL;DR: This study suggests that densities of M. balthica ≥1.6 mm may have an impact on the numbers of juvenile bivalves re-locating at this site, but that this effect is not the result of direct adult-juvenile interactions, but is caused indirectly by density-dependent predation by C. maenas.
