Wireless mesh networks: a survey

In the last years, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have gained increasing attention from both the research community and actual users. As sensor nodes are generally battery-powered devices, the critical aspects to face concern how to reduce the energy consumption of nodes, so that the network lifetime can be extended to reasonable times. In this paper we first break down the energy consumption for the components of a typical sensor node, and discuss the main directions to energy conservation in WSNs. Then, we present a systematic and comprehensive taxonomy of the energy conservation schemes, which are subsequently discussed in depth. Special attention has been devoted to promising solutions which have not yet obtained a wide attention in the literature, such as techniques for energy efficient data acquisition. Finally we conclude the paper with insights for research directions about energy conservation in WSNs.

Energy conservation in wireless sensor networks: A survey

The objective of this paper is to give a comprehensive introduction to applied cryptography with an engineer or computer scientist in mind. The emphasis is on the knowledge needed to create practical systems which supports integrity, confidentiality, or authenticity. Topics covered includes an introduction to the concepts in cryptography, attacks against cryptographic systems, key use and handling, random bit generation, encryption modes, and message authentication codes. Recommendations on algorithms and further reading is given in the end of the paper. This paper should make the reader able to build, understand and evaluate system descriptions and designs based on the cryptographic components described in the paper.

Energy harvesting generators are attractive as inexhaustible replacements for batteries in low-power wireless electronic devices and have received increasing research interest in recent years. Ambient motion is one of the main sources of energy for harvesting, and a wide range of motion-powered energy harvesters have been proposed or demonstrated, particularly at the microscale. This paper reviews the principles and state-of-art in motion-driven miniature energy harvesters and discusses trends, suitable applications, and possible future developments.

Energy Harvesting From Human and Machine Motion for Wireless Electronic Devices

AERPAW (Aerial Experimentation and Research Platform for Advanced Wireless) is an advanced wireless research platform centered around fully programmable radios and fully programmable vehicles. In this paper we detail the vehicle aspects of the testbed, including the AERPAW UAVs, UGVs, as well as the hardware and software choices made by the team, as well as our experience earned in the past few years.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are a critical technology in tilling the gap where the network infrastructure is insufficient or does not exist at all. The dynamic topology of MANET requires relatively large control overhead which impedes the scalability of the network. Recently, adapting a widely-used Internet protocol such as Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) for MANETs has been actively investigated to benefit from its maturity, interoperability, and scalability. To enhance the scalability of OSPF, several extensions have been proposed including flooding backbone, differential hollos, smart peering, and distance effect. However, most of the existing work is based on the assumption of single OSPF area. In this paper, we present promising results from employing multiple OSPF areas as an efficient mean to enhance the scalability of MANETs. A novel analytical model is developed to capture the relationship between the number of areas and the flooding overhead. We perform theoretical analysis to show that there exists an optimum number of areas that minimizes the overhead. By using areas, the overhead can be significantly reduced (in some cases by 95%). The analytical results are verified with detailed simulation experiments. Finally, several candidate dynamic area formation schemes are investigated with different mobility models. The results show that the optimum number of areas has an even greater impact on the scalability of the scenarios with higher degree of realism.

NEAT: Network link emulation with adaptive time dilation

In this paper we present the design of our wireless mesh network testbed (CentMesh), which facilitates experimentation as a service. CentMesh differs from other testbeds in terms of its modular, flexible and extensible design. The CentMesh software suite provides a modular programming library that can be modified and/or extended by the users of the testbed, allowing them to implement their own modules (e.g., routing, scheduling etc.). The basic services such as transport of control messages, broadcast, etc., are provided to experimenters by a set of system modules. Modularity allows the experimenters to implement only the part of network stack that they are interested in experimenting with, while reusing the other readily available CentMesh modules.

CentMesh: Modular and Extensible Wireless Mesh Network Testbed

—With its promise of increasing softwarization, im- proving disaggregability, and creating an open-source based ecosystem in the area of Radio Access Networks, the idea of Open RAN has generated rising interest in the community. Even as the community races to provide and verify complete Open RAN systems, the importance of veriﬁcation of systems based on Open RAN under real-world conditions has become clear, and testbed facilities for general use have been envisioned, in addition to private testing facilities. Aerial robots, including autonomous ones, are among the increasingly important and interesting clients of RAN systems, but also present a challenge for testbeds. Based on our experience in architecting and operating an advanced wireless testbed with aerial robots as a primary citizen, we present considerations relevant to the design of Open RAN testbeds, with particular attention to making such a testbed capable of controlled experimentation with aerial clients. We also present representative results from the NSF AERPAW testbed on Open RAN slicing, programmable vehicles, and programmable radios.
